How can I find these props???
« on: Sep 04, 2009, 12:04 am »
I'm the Prop Master at my new school, and this place has high expectation from my last one (which I SMed for all the time and designed lights)

For our play "Robin Hood" I have a good 50-60 props to handle with 2 people under me, one with 3-4 years of experience and another with none (who I have to train)

So far I'm using my Community Theatre resources to help me make medieval swords, but one problem is finding cheap wooden plates I just need 4-6 of them with 2-3 wooden bowls and wooden spoons to go with those plates....

I'll just type a list of stuff I need and if anyone has any thoughts or ideas of where I could get these for a very cheap price that would take away some of the burden, or if you have any instructions to make these items please do post (the people under me have no tasks to work on for the moment, but if I could keep them busy that would be great!)
.::PLEASE I BEG YOU DON'T HESITATE TO POST::.

toe nail polish (from the medieval age -the play is out of wack!)
Wooden Plates (6)
Wooden Spoons (6)
Wooden Blows (3-4)
Brooms (2-must look very old, If you know how to make one please share your knowledge!)
Tarot cards (one deck)
board with wheels (one of the characters has no legs, and the actor needs to "roll" in on a board with wheel, the Medieval Era had wooden wheels not casters)
Trumpets (2- Sound may have cues for this, so they don't have to work)

EDIT: Removed red moving text as it was very distracting.  Replaced it with centered text. -- PSMK

Most areas have Renaissance Faire groups close by. If you contact someone from there they could probably lead you to a vendor who makes them for a living. That of course requires money so it is understandable if that is not an option. The Faire might have a storage of them to lend you possibly. If you can get to a party store, sometimes they will have the "Tiki" themes that sometimes have fake wood bowls and silverware. They can look cheesy close up but usually don't read too badly onstage.

Tarot cards would be at any kind of mystical shop. Ask around, I bet someone you know has a pack somewhere nearby. Also, Barnes and Noble carries basic kits for a reasonable price.

Brooms are pretty easy to make. Two thick dowel rods, loose (but strong) straw, thin-ish rope. Use the rope to tightly attach the stiff straw pieces to the bottom of the dowel rods. You can round off the top of the dowel rod to look most realistic.

Trumpets can be borrowed from the band room I would imagine. Normally they have spares lying around.
XX. The only valid excuse for missing one's cue is death.

For the wooden dining stuff, try a thirft store, or oddly enough, Target.  I got my mother-in-law a number of wood bowls for snacks, last year at Target, and they were something less than $3 a pop.

Did they have toe nail polish in the medieval ages?  And would anyone be able to tell the difference if you used modern toe nail polish?

The board with wheels you're describing just sounds like a dolly which you should have around the shop.  I'd just cover it with something to make it look presentable and no one should be the wiser.

Of course all these things depend on the director so make sure to go through them before settling on any particular design.

Thank You All for you help I had my previous SM send me his highly detailed instructions on how to make swords for about 5 dollars a piece,  Thanks Jason! Tarot card wise I called a local physic/ palm reader and she told me where she got her cards, and Thanks for the broom instructions Tomorrowtoday! And the board with wheels the director says it has to be self propelled I may go ahead and use casters then cover the sides with Masonite, the character is going to have a raggy costume so it will cover most of it up.

Thank you again!
