Saving grace- I actually got 8 hours of sleep in-between tech days because of it!

MY SM teacher recommended The Stage Management Handbooks by Daniel Ionazzi, so I bought it super cheap from Amazon and have flipped through it a few times. Bachstage Handbook is also great, and getting a primer in all the tech areas is also good-- I've seen someone recommend "Technical Theatre for Non-Technical People" on here before but I can't vouch for it. I honestly learned a lot by just googling and finding paperwork examples from SM's websites, etc.

Matthew- Yeah, there are a couple (maybe three? I can't remember) in the NY office. The pyramid is basically like Executive Director -->regional director -->senior business reps -->business reps. The senior reps over see a few different contracts for the entire region, whereas the reps we would contact are usually for one or two contract types in select states. The senior reps don't get involved in the day-to-day as much, as that's what the reps and contract associates are for.

Some of you may be interested in this. Some stage managers who have Tumblrs are coming together to form SMblr- as it says a community hub for stage managers. Mostly (though not all) of the people involved are in school/just out of school so it seems like a good place to get ideas and maybe even meet some people local to you.
Here ya go! http://smblrsunite.tumblr.com/

Matthew, I think you just caused three business reps to knock on the door of their senior business reps. Hope you get a solid answer soon.

Introductions / Re: Freelance
« on: Sep 27, 2014, 05:55 pm »
You questions are pretty vague, but if you poke around the forum some more I think you'll find the answers you're looking for. I haven't been out of school that long, but the way I've managed to do it so far is
1) luck
2) make people like and want to hire you
3) save up some cash for when you don't have any
4) never stop looking for work. If you have a show, look for your next show.

As for taxes I'm just taking them to someone who went to school to learn how to do them. I'm way too slammed to try and master freelance taxes right now.

Because a lot of us are juggling highly variable schedules and multiple gigs, I thought this article was very interesting and helpful. I particularly liked "maximize the effectiveness of your naps."

Kay- I did the same thing. Every show I'd have quotes doodled somewhere in my binder. My favorite college director quote was, "Scene shifts are like sprinkles!" and him nick-naming the other ASM and me Spike and Re-Spike (there were obviously a few changes to the set).

Welcome!

The Green Room / Re: Mini Rant---SM T-shirts and products
« on: Jun 17, 2014, 11:54 pm »
The only t-shirt I've had that was vaguely SM-related was a Keep Calm parody shirt that said Now Panic and Freak Out that I wore 1st day of tech, which was very much an in-joke with the crew/cast. Lighting designers get cooler stuff- did you know GAM makes earrings made out of tiny gobos?!

Not sure if it'll happen at the Tonys, but this video has pretty much the same idea.

When in doubt, call the business rep.

I often get caught up in thinking very long term, and as a recent grad I've been getting very caught up in "oh my god if I do this one thing wrong/if I'm not working on a show constantly I am ruining my career forever and ever" [lightning flash/thunder/wilhem scream]. But I'm also coming to realize that life is always changing. I appreciate you sharing this. Two years ago you would have never thought this would happen. Who knows what your life will be two years from now? Best of luck.

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: SM Team Hierarchy
« on: May 28, 2014, 09:33 pm »
Outside of AEA you'll also get weird terms- I just got hired as a "deck SM." Meaning, I run backstage. You might also hear floor manager, and that position has various responsibilities based on where you are.
And right now I'm temping at AEA- everyone here is right, you're only ever hired officially as an SM, 1st ASM, 2nd ASM, etc.

The Green Room / Re: IFTTT

And then one I created myself to email me when a Craigslist search returns a new result.

Edited to add: Text to remind you 30min before an event on your calendar.

That sounds like a good idea. Right now I have an RSS feed set up to tell me when stage manager is in a post in the gigs section. Doesn't always work out great, but the best thing I ever had pop up was someone who was looking for someone to be Chewbacca and Luke at her wedding- she mentioned in the ad that she was a stage manager so it came up.

I took the headline too figuratively. Very cool article.
