Tools of the Trade / Spike tape that doesn't pull up paint on masonite???

I just moved into a brand new building with new studio spaces. We discovered that the regular spike tape we used rips up the black paint off the masonite in a very ugly fashion. The contractors, etc. are asking that we use painter's tape, which I go blue in the face arguing that it's not helpful for rehearsing on.
Has anyone used anything other than painter's tape to tape out sets in rehearsal studios/theaters, that WON'T damage the floor?
FYI - these rehearsal spaces are also classrooms, so they get used a lot; lots of foot traffic.
