Hello and welcome to SMNetwork.  I think you might enjoy Thread to Vent About/Actors Behaving Badly/As Haiku Only, a tongue-in-cheek way of sharing some of our experiences. This community is intended to be a source of information and and a way for stage managers to share and connect; I hope you find it to be useful.

Hello and welcome to SMNetwork, Tyler.  Theatres are hiring all of the time, but it is definitely good to start sending out your resumes early.  Check out our Midwest/Chicago board on Regional to connect with Chicago area SMs.  Try to identify some companies you are interested in working for and start networking.  Best of luck on your final semester.  Hope you find the forum to be a useful resource.

Hello and welcome to SMNetwork!  While our membership is primarily SMs, we welcome members from related fields and appreciate their perspective.  Sound questions tend to pop-up on occasion over in Tools of the Trade so I hope you will weigh-in and offer your knowledge as a sound engineer and musician.

Hello and welcome to SMNetwork, RJ!  If your grad school is not in Chicago, pay a visit to our Regional board so that you can connect and network with stage managers there to learn about opportunities in the area as you make the transition and figure out the right balance of school and work.  Glad that you discovered the forum; hope it proves useful to you.

Hello and welcome to SMNetwork, Julianne.  I worked on a production of Fiddler years ago; it is a beautiful show.  Browse through our Plays and Musicals board for tips on working on musicals or use the search feature in the upper right hand corner if you have specific questions.  Be confident and you work on the show, but don't be afraid to ask questions of the director.  Hope all goes well and that you find the forum to be a useful resource.

Hello and welcome to SMNetwork!  You've made a great first step by identifying your interest and by joining a community of stage managers.  Matthew offers great advice.  I urge you to use the search feature in the upper right hand corner of the site.  Multiple versions of the questions you have posed have been discussed at length; the previous discussions will offer insight and help you identify additional questions that will help better tailor your discussion.  I would highly recommend finding shadowing opportunities at a professional theatre in your area to get a better idea of what the job requires before you make the leap, especially before making the financial commitment of further education or an internship.  Visit our Regional Advice board to aid in your networking with local stage managers.  I hope the forum can be useful to you as you evaluate your next steps.

I would be happy to answer more questions privately; just send me a PM.

Hello and welcome to SMNetwork, Alex.  You will want to check out The Hardline to learn more about AEA issues that stage managers encounter and to ask questions as you make your decision about joining the Union.  Congrats on your recent graduation.  Hope you find the forum to be a useful resource.

Hello and welcome to SMNetwork, Sarah!  I have had the pleasure of working with many faculty, students, and alumni of Boston University.  You've already proven to be a whiz at finding info on the forums; congrats on winning the inaugural scavenger hunt.  Best of luck on your studies.  Happy to help on your research project once you have it finalized; just send me a PM.
