Non-binders for actors for a reading
« on: Aug 05, 2010, 05:53 pm »
The director I am working for (for a reading) does not want the actors to have binders and to be more free in what they're holding (so possibly smaller as well). He wants to use something possibly in half size. So I am looking for ideas. The problem occurs in that we will be getting new music and script pages almost every day, so it can't be a permanent binding, but something more flexible. We're worried that the turn over for new pages is going to be to long (With re-sizing, cutting, and special punching). Thoughts?

Poetry and Prose competitors tend to use memo binders since they are small enough to hold easily in one hand, allowing for easy handling and maximum movement. It is a standard printer and copier size so that will minimize turn over time. If you are using a copy machine there should be a resizing option where you change from 8 1/2 x 11 to 8 1/2 x 5 1/2.

You could look at report covers with fasteners, or even file folders with fasteners that you can open and close.  Will the actors have music stands for the reading?  Maybe he'd be willing to let each actor figure out what works for them individually; some actors like to just keep their sheets loose on the music stand and hold one at a time (though yes, pages can get lost or out of order this way).

Well, the Kindle 3 actually isn't at a terrible price point for this kind of thing...

Most companies would find the cost prohibitive, but if you do a lot of workshops and readings, or you collaborate with playwrights during lengthy rehearsal processes (so scripts are constantly changing), a device in the $100 - 130 range would probably pay for itself over a few years of use.

Of course, while you can take notes, it's still much clunkier than just pencilling them into the margins.

rings?

two (top and bottom) keep paper together, maybe a cardboard back for one side to keep it from getting too too wacky?
