I have a pair of West Marine sailing gloves...I recommend them to everyone.  They were $15.  For work that entails some fly work and heavy lifting, I have a pair of Mechanix gloves I bought at Ocean State Job Lot for $5...great deal. They save my hands.

I personally prefer horseback riding gloves....strange, I know.
I have horses though, and ride often, so I have an excuse! :) They provide a very firm grip, and if you get the Velcro type, they are easy to take on and off, and fit in your back pocket.
Best of luck.

I don't usually wear gloves at all - I find it harder to 'feel' the line, and it often feels like the rope is slipping when it isn't. I would rather have to use a lot of hand cream than be scared every time I flew something.

*grimaces* Ouch. That makes my hands hurt just thinking about that....I don't recommend hurting yourself, unless of course you like that sort of thing...then by all means. lol
There are sorts of gloves that are thinner, if you are as afraid as iamchristuffin, but most definitely do NOT go bare-handed....ouch ouch ouch!

Petzl belaying gloves. Thin, light and comfortable but very tough.
