Half-size binders
« on: Feb 19, 2014, 12:12 am »
My producer seems to have recently fallen in love with half-size binders (about the size of an iPad), and they are all over the place in my theatre. I confess that, seeing them every day, I'm starting to like them - I like that they wouldn't take up all of my table during rehearsals, for example, so I could have more space for line note forms, checklists, and designer notes. And they would absolutely reduce the size of my work bag, which is currently big enough to fit a 4" full binder. I generally like the idea of my binder not taking up all the space in our (small) light booth.

The question is: Are they too small? I don't know how I would lay out my pages; whether they'd contain half the text as the regular script, or if I'd print them in a smaller font - and then, would my notes fit? What do I do with regular-size sheets of paper people give me? Am I just liking these binders because they're adorable and seem to have cuter designs than full binders?

Do any of you use half-size binders for work? How do you organize them? Should I give up on my dreams of a smaller work bag?

Half-sized as in too small to hold 8.5x11" paper or half-size as in 1/2" to 1" ring size, so just narrower?

I think the novelty would wear off very quickly . . .

Especially cutting paper down . . .

And what happens if you need to print on the smaller paper? Do they make that size or would you have to cut down it down to fit every single time?

Not really interested in how cute the designs are if you'll end up tossing it out in frustration.

I think they serve a purpose. In Australia, we are lucky, we use "a" sized paper - where each size up is exactly one half of the paper size bellow it - our closest equivalent to letter is A4 (8.3" x 11.7"). A5 is approx 5.85" x 8.3".  Have a look for A5 paper, you may luck out - it should fit in your binder.

lsears - I'm talking about 8.5"x5.5" binders.

Mac - Does "they serve a purpose" mean you use them, or have seen them used, within theater? I absolutely see why one would use them as a planner, agenda, or something else - but I wonder how useful they'd be for effects of calling a show. The A5 idea is a good one, though!

Dallas, Matt - I had a feeling they wouldn't be as SM-practical as I was hoping, but wanted to see if anyone else used them and liked them. Since posting this I've thought of another drawback: Being handed papers. While I can see myself finding smaller paper and printing my script smaller, I have no idea of what I'd do with any extras I was handed.

I can see them being useful for an ASM on deck, perhaps. Easier to tote about during tech for making notes. Wouldn't want it as my permanent book though.

I've used them for actors scripts on new works (especially ones under development).

I used to do an SM version of the various department's paperwork (cue details etc incase I need to reprogram the show & I usually have a backup call book which is A5 - because A5 fits nicely in the front pocket of my bag.
