Prop Drinks : Port
« on: Feb 27, 2010, 05:23 am »
Does anyone have a good recipe for mixing a port replacement to be drunk onstage, please ? I've tried with blackcurrant cordial, but it just comes out too 'weak' looking, and port is a very dense colour.

Many thanks
Lizzie

I have a herbal, berry tea which is the correct colour (it is made in by a tea house in the mountains of victoria, but I am sure there is some american equivalent), which when boiled down a bit looks remarkably like port. Augmented with a dash of blackberry syrup creates a nice, dark fortified wine look.

grape juice or cranberry juice base and then add either red (to grape) or blue (to cranberry) food dye to color. Grape juice is a bear cuz it stains, but it gives the thickness you need - we build dubonnet with cranberry base and a port with grape base and they looked amazing.

I've always used blackcurrant cordial with flat Coke and a tiny bit of blue food colouring - takes a little bit of experimentation to get it right but looks good when the proportions are correct!

This is super old, but Port is a common theatrical drink and I have a good recipe, soo...

XXX Vitamin Water is a great base. Put 1 drop of blue food coloring in about a 1/5 of a plastic cup full of water. Add XXX and 12 drops of red food coloring until full. Mix together and very convincing-looking port!

This is not the most translatable of methods in terms of measurements, but it would give someone a rough starting place.
