What's in your bag?
« on: Jul 15, 2008, 12:29 pm »
There's a lot of talk about what in your kit, and by extension, what would be in your ideal kit, but I'm gearing this question to the other city-dwelling freelancers like myself:

What do you think it is most important to have with you on a day-to-day rehearsal space basis? Sometimes it is less than ideal to travel to a day/temp job with your complete kit and then not be able to leave it (or props for that matter) in a rental rehearsal venue - and often times, where that is changes from day to day.

So I ask out of curiosity, what is most important for you to have with you?

I know my answer...
Companions whom I loved and still love, tell them my song.

A small stack of white typing paper, pencils, pens, a sharpie, a couple colors of spike tape, a multitool, and some gaff tape.
Then maybe other stuff depending on the show and its specific needs.

Pens, pencils, pencil sharpener, eraser, one colour of spike tape, duct tape, bandaids (the basic kind), extra loose-leaf paper, safety pins, mini stapler and extra staples

Then anything extra based on the show or problems that came up the day before.

I'll preface this by saying that my daily bag is a laptop backpack...my computer, memory stick, ipod & all cords needed to make it talk to any basic sound set up, a folder with schedule, contact sheet, etc, pens, sharpies, mechanical pencils, small notebook, hair elastics, bandaids, Neosporin, and Advil, and my tool pouch with my leatherman & flashlight

I too carry a laptop bag, and also a purse.  Generally try really, really, hard to leave my kit wherever I happen to be working.

In my bag I have:
- laptop and power cable
- memory stick
- 3-prong to 2-prong adaptor
- my iTalk
-umbrella
- baby wipes
- some tea
- splenda packets
- gum
- network cable
- random assortment of pens/pencils/hilighters/sharpies
- very mini stapler, hole punch, and scotch tape set (from Claire's boutique!)
- my "commonplace book" (anyone read the lemony snicket series?)
-water bottle

In my purse I have:
- phone, palm pilot, iPod and headphones
- wallet with credit cards, cash, license, insurance card
- more gum
- kleenex
- dental floss
- hand lotion and hand sanitizer
- powder, mini-makeup kit, lip gloss, lipstick, some perfume
- various assortment of pens and sharpies and hilighters
- rosary
- nail clippers
- keys
- sunglasses

Wow, that was fun!

Stage managing is getting to do everything your mom told you not to do - read in the dark, sit too close to the TV, and play with the light switches!

usually I just bring my kit, because it's all contained in a rolling backpack, but at a minimum I bring my script, a small notepad (I'm sure this will eventually be replaced by my laptop, which is on order), pencil, gerber, and safety pins, bobby pins, hair ties, and bandaids in my pocket. I'm working with high school and college  students right now, and thats what they have a tendency to ask me for. If i'll be backstage I'll throw in my maglite too.
