Dropbox account full
« on: Mar 05, 2013, 05:32 pm »
So on my current show, I'm using Dropbox to share video of choreography for actors to review and for designers to see in advance of a run though.  Problem? my free account is full.  I used to use iDisk to transfer files, but that's dead.

What's current, and free, to support Dropbox?  Any ideas?

Thanks,

Are you using a shared file or just linking them to your file? If you use a shared folder, everyone shares the space taken up instead of putting it all on your dropbox. Is that an option?

Not a long term solution, but if you share dropbox files with someone and they make a new dropbox account, you are awarded a small additional amount of storage, up to a certain amount.

Can you just "email" the files? I use www.wetransfer.com for podcasts i record. Files usually are 40+mb. Simple to use, and free.

Bwoodbury, I've got 15 people who have "joined" the folder.  Unless there's some setting I don't understand in Dropbox (which is entirely possible), the folder's still full of stuff.

I think I need to send out an e-mail telling everyone that I need to rotate out last week's vids to make room for what we're doing now, and they need to download the files if they want to reference them later.

Nick, that looks like an interesting link and may be a good way to handle it, but my company's server won't let big files be sent over e-mail.  Does the retransfer e-mail just link to their server, and the files are accessible through a web browser?

Thanks,

Sugarsync! Just like dropbox, syncs to your hard drive if you want, cloud storage etc.

Have you considered a private YouTube account?

You can upload videos and make them private -- so only you can see them, unregistered -- so only those with the link can see them, or public -- so anyone can see them. Perhaps making them unlisted and then sharing the links with everyone would work? You could have a file that had the title/date of the video beside the link.

Maybe it won't work with rules/copyrights/etc, but that's what I would try to do.
To be a good stage manager you need to have the soul of an artist, the mind of a director, the eye of a designer, the joy of being an actor...
and the ability to manage them all.

Won't be sent over email if you use wetransfer. You'll upload through a flash site upload, they recipients will get a link emailed to them, the click the link, download a zip file, and voila! Large files sent just as easy as that!

I second the youtube thing . . . we did that . . . marked them as private . . . deleted them weekly.

Youtube is perfect!  I've used it for fight choreo before, I was just so locked into the Dropbox paradigm with this group of people that it didn't occur to me.

I third the YouTube plan. I did this with a private link when working on a workshop musical. The writers would stay home and work, I'd film the scene with my iPad, link them, then I'd wait for an email of new script pages.

However, any videos need to be 15 minutes or less. If you need to go over 15 minutes, use this link below for instructions on how to "verify your account." I've done it and it takes a second.

If you create a special YouTube account for he show, company members can subscribe to the account, and links to new videos will be e-mailed to them when you upload.

Going back to Dropbox, if you agree to use it's Camera Upload feature, then delete the photos, you are awarded up to 3GB extra space. Through things like this, the Space Race and referrels, I nw have a 13GB Dropbox for free!

A very delayed reply, but just FYI, Copy (www.copy.com) gives you 15GB free on sign up, and Box (www.box.com) gives you 10GB. This is compared to Dropbox's 2GB....
