TYA Virgins?

How many of you out there cut your teeth on Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA) ?
Is this a good way to enter the Union?
Did you start out there?

I've done a TYA contract through Theatreworks. I already had my card, but 2/3 of my cast got theirs through the show, and many others (outside of my show) I know also did. My experience with TYA is a little different since it was a tour, but I think, if you feel ready to join the union, that this is an excellent way to get in. The upside is that a lot of companies who run under the TYA are willing to hire non-AEA SMs with the idea of you getting your card through the job.

From my vantage point, I approached working the TYA contract as I would any other contract, learn how the rules work (and there are differences from other contracts) and go from there.

I have been hearing lot about TYA lately (I'm a year out from graduating and a lot of my friends just finished up) and I'm not sure I'm clear on what it is. Is it a type of contract, a type of theatre, or a specific program? None of the above?

TYA= Theatre for Young Audiences
Equity contract

I have heard the term: theatre for young audiences in reference to a type of theatre program and/or a specific theatre that presents "theatre for young audiences"

This directly from the TYA Rulebook~

DEFINITION:
(a) Productions Expressly Written for Young Audiences (i.e., productions of plays or
material expressly written, created or adapted to be performed for young audiences up
through and including the high school level).

(b) Productions Adapted From Adult Material (i.e., plays or material originally created
and/or performed for adults that have been adapted and/or performed for young
audiences).

My very first job out of college was a TYA contract, and while I was able to earn points through the program I ended up not going equity.  It was a great experience to work under equity conditions and learn the union ropes, and it showed me that I wasn't ready at that time to join the union.  But about half the actors on each show were able to get points towards joining the union and for those that wanted to go that direction it was a great start.  If you're interested in the union, even just to get at taste how it works, its a great opportunity - even if you don't end up going the equity route.
