Just read that Shakespeare & Company in Lenox, MA is facing closure if they can't raise $2.3 million by March.

This is from LA Times and Playbill.com...

Los Angeles Times | Jan. 29, 2010 | 11:33 a.m.

Pasadena Playhouse to close Feb. 7 because of money woes

The Pasadena Playhouse will close Feb. 7 after the final performance of "Camelot," leaving its future in jeopardy as company leaders explore ways out of its lingering financial woes, including a possible bankruptcy filing.

Stephen Eich, the executive director hired in June, said the playhouse is essentially out of cash. It faces more than $500,000 in immediate bills, plus more than $1.5 million owed on bank loans and other debts that have dogged the nonprofit company since the mid-1990s. Thirty-seven employees will be out of work when the playhouse closes, Eich said.

Eich said he isn't sure yet about whether or how the playhouse's 8,000 subscribers will be reimbursed.

The playhouse, which opened in 1917, was designated in 1937 as the state theater of California and has hosted a multitude of actors who went on to become stars.

Word on the street is San Jose Rep may be struggling to stay above water. I know at least one San Jose theatre has already gone under, can't remember which though.

San Jose Rep has been in trouble for a while - the city bailed them out a few years ago - but I didn't think they were in any worse position.
BTW, AMTSJ is the theatre that closed a few years ago.

Let's hope it's only temporary...

From the Intiman website:

"An Important Message from Intiman
The Board of Trustees votes to cancel the 2011 Season following All My Sons
As many of you know, the past several months have been extremely challenging for Intiman Theatre. While we recently announced that the initial Impact Intiman campaign benchmark was met and that we were launching our strategic planning phase of the campaign, the reality of our financial situation has made it necessary to reevaluate the potential for the current season.

As much as we had hoped to conduct a strategic plan while operating, it is evident that we need to close the 2011 season following the final performance of All My Sons on April 17. With our current income limitations there’s no alternative.

Our primary intent has and continues to be to preserve the future of Intiman - and our hope was to save the season, too. Simultaneous efforts to accomplish both are simply unattainable. While we are driven by that "show must go on" kind of determination, we must ensure that shows go on the Intiman stage for years and that can only happen if we pause, plan, and prepare for strong seasons in 2012 and beyond.

By canceling the current season, we preserve and protect the ability to serve the community in 2012, when the board intends to reopen the theatre and continue Intiman's history of presenting this community with engaging art. We are still working through details of how this impacts our constituents and will have more information available in the next week. All ticket holders will receive information in the coming days.

The open support from the community has been very heartwarming. We know you want us to continue and we are grateful for your generosity during this time of repair and regrouping.

We are in the process of figuring out what will be needed for long-term viability. We will continue to communicate with our community in this process. We appreciate the patrons who have supported us during this time and we look forward to seeing you all again when the theatre returns."

Intiman Theater Cancels Season

By KATE TAYLOR

The board of the financially embattled Intiman Theater in Seattle voted on Saturday to cancel the rest of the 2011 season and lay off the theater’s staff, said Susan Trapnell, a consultant that the board hired late last month to lead a financial turnaround.

Ms. Trapnell said that she had advised the board to take the step because it was not clear the theater could meet its obligations for the rest of the season.

“I just thought we need to stop and regroup and figure out what it’s going to take to do next year and raise the money to do that, rather than kill ourselves to be back at zero in January,” Ms. Trapnell said.

Some employees will be given two weeks’ notice, and some will be laid off immediately, with severance. The theater’s current production, of Arthur Miller’s “All My Sons,” will close on Sunday as scheduled.

In mid-February, Intiman announced an emergency fund-raising campaign and said that it needed to raise $500,000 by the end of March and another $500,000 by September to stay open. On March 31, it said that, even though it had only raised $450,000 so far, it would continue the season.

But only after that, apparently, did Ms. Trapnell have a chance to look closely at the theater’s revenue projections, which she decided were unrealistic. She said she made the recommendation to cancel the season now because actors were about to start arriving to begin rehearsals for Intiman’s next production, and she was not sure the theater could pay them through the length of the run.

Ms. Trapnell has experience in a similar situation. She led another Seattle company, A Contemporary Theater, out of a similar crisis in 2003. In that case, too, the board decided to close the theater temporarily, and she said that made her task easier. The theater ultimately reopened.

“I think the only hope is, you stop and you focus — otherwise, you just never get your head up far enough to think, and it just gets worse and worse,” she said. “You start using a lot of well-intentioned money, and then you can’t get it when you really have your head clear because you’ve broken promises too many times.”

"Florida Stage, an iconic presence in South Florida's theatre scene since 1987, has closed its doors after its board of directors voted June 5 to seek court-ordered bankruptcy protection. Short of a white knight saving the company, the theatre is not expected to resurface."

Surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet:

Joffrey Ballet cancels first part of its 2011-2012 season (Chicago Tribune Article)

This one is not due to solvency issues, but rather an impasse between the Joffrey and AGMA in renewing the dancers' contracts.  They've locked out the dancers even though AGMA hasn't threatened any adverse action.  According to the Joffrey they're having so much trouble reaching the AGMA rep that they have run out of time to assemble a good contract and still start the season on time.  Could turn into an ungodly mess over here.
