HELP! MY CAST IS NUDE!!
« on: Mar 17, 2008, 03:00 pm »
Hey, I really need some help.  I will be Stage Managing the show Compleat Female Stage Beauty my next quarter at college.  My cast members will be semi-nude and potray a wide spectrum of sexual acts while onstage.  I have been trying to find equity rules on such, but have only found rules regarding photography.  Can anyone explain to me the rules/regulations of nudity and potrayal of sexual acts during rehearsal?  Or any advise what so ever.

Somewhere there is a thread about how one should deal with this on a personal level.
It do not recall seeing anything having to do with contracts or rules though.

Not sure about AEA regulations regarding nudity/simulated sex acts onstage - but, since you're doing this in an educational setting, definitely read up on school resources for LGBTQ issues, Ombuds/conflict resolution, "safe campus" policies, etc. so that, should a company member ask, you can produce current contact and policy info quickly.

Print up "Private Rehearsal" signs for unlocked studio doors, so that awkward interruptions stay at a minimum.

My first show in university had a lot of very intimate sequences - partial nudity, simulated sex - feel free to PM me with questions.

It's in the LORT agreement. Search the word 'nudity' and you will find it.

Here is a good thread http://smnetwork.org/forum/index.php/topic,1216.0.html about the personal issues with actors and nudity, though I don't remember there being a discussion touching on LORT rules.

I worked on "The Blue Room" on a LORT contract. The actors were constantly nude. They also simulated sex onstage.

There is a nudity clause in the rulebook. I'm not sure where. What it says is that upon audition they have to be told that they will appear naked so it's not a surprise to them on the first day of rehearsal.

Keep the rehearsal room as comfortable as possible. They will probably be naked for at least one rehearsal, so make sure the rehearsal is closed.

We also had a photographer take pictures. He was sure to take pictures with their clothes on.

Make sure that wardrobe has robes and slippers for them for tech. Actors shouldn't have to be naked for the entire 10 out of 12. If you are going to bring up bright lights, warn them and have your ASM to have robes or towels handy. Make their comfort a top priority. It's not easy being naked.

Something else to think of in a school setting is making sure that your crew is comfortable with the material.  Since many school shows have crews that are there as part of a class requirement, you should make sure that they are aware that there will be nudity and adult content.

If it is a musical, this would also apply to the orchestra.

How'd it end up?? Have you done the show yet?

Well, I started my Broadway career on HAIR, so.. it was not a big deal. I do remember Annie Keefe SMing the first Changing Room, where the entire cast of men got naked and then clothed on stage... all rehearsal were carefully closed, and then they slowly became comfortable aned eventually opened rehearsals before putting them all in front of an audience. I now work in Opera where the thought of an all nude cast is, shall we say, not an oft thought of concept...
