Rehearsal/Performance
KC-SM:
I have a scenario/question:
I'm currently working on a Play Reading code and I want to have REHEARSAL on the SAME DAY as the PERFORMANCE. Because there is no handbook I can feel a bit at sea when it comes to enforcing the rules of rehearsal. Do general Equity Rules apply (e.g. break times etc)? I think they do, but I was having a moment of brain farts. Also what is the general rule for same day rehearsal/performances regarding the break in between. Is it an hour, an hour and a half, or two hour break before half hour?
MOCK UP:
REHEARSAL 1pm-5pm
HALF HOUR: 6:30pm
PERFORMANCE 7pm
Does anyone have any suggestions to streamline this schedule and make it easiest for the actors and director?
loebtmc:
Stupid qq but, do you have the rules? I don't think they're on the website but it's seomthing like only one page - the office shd have a copy (I have it at home but am currently out on the road, sorry)
Either way, as I recall the rules are pretty loose - of course, your reh counts in your max 20 hrs of reh, but my guess is that as long as you have given the actors that 2-hrs before call for dinner for a call that is 4 hrs or less, it works -
push come to shove, just have your actors vote on it - and that makes it good. And looks like the way most REAL Readers Theater I've done works - a pick-up reh the day of before a dinner break before presentation - just watch the length of day (tho, unless the show is horrifically long, you prob won't have an issue w going long)

When I have questions like this I always go to the AEA Business Rep. That is what they are there for, and they are usually happy to go over the rules with me. In many cases I just shoot the appropriate BR an email and generally get a response back quite quickly.
loebtmc:
...and heck, if you are in NYC you have the best access to the most business reps around - that's always the first line of defense -
KC-SM:
Business Reps are GREAT for knowledge, but you never want to red flag them about something that you aren't sure you want to have Equity's hands in.
To talk to a rep about something, sometimes locks you into a decision before you want to make it. I like to talk to everyone about a question before going to the Business Rep.
