What one item do you think describes our profession?
« on: Sep 30, 2011, 09:24 am »
I recently had this conversation with a group of stage managers, and every single answer was different. From headsets to pencils to spike tape, what one item would you choose to describe to another the job of a stage manager? I said headset, but would love to hear what others think!!

The complete prompt script book (that holds the calling script, blocking script, plot/costume tracking sheets, etc.)

Multi tool of course. I'd specifically say a gerber because of the quick open snap/slide action.

Clipboard and checklist.  Or, at least that's what I use when I'm doing some sort of grahpic design about stage management.

Headset and crossbones.
I personally would like to bring a tortoise onto the stage, turn it into a racehorse, then into a hat, a song, a dragon and a fountain of water. One can dare anything in the theatre and it is the place where one dares the least. -Ionesco

Stopwatch. Most of the time I find my real function in rehearsal is to clutch at my stomach and tell people the time.

Oh, I'm torn between either a clipboard or a flashlight.  Definitely leaning towards the headlamp type of flashlight.

At the moment, I would say my Ipad...it has become a tool for me running my rehearsals and shows.

However...I did I show with an older Equity actress who had trouble seeing and jokingly said I had to give her a "runway" to exit in the dark, so my next answer would be glow tape.
