THOUGHT OF THE DAY: What's your day job?
« on: May 17, 2010, 08:18 am »
I was over in employment and someone's response in Child Wrangling got me thinking.

Stage Managers are just as subject to the tediousness of having to hold down a full time job.  So for those of us who haven't quite been able to
make a living off of SM'ing....

What's your day job?

I'll start.  I'm a substitute teacher.  Come summer, I'll have to find some interesting job to keep my bills satisfied for a couple of months.

I've done a few jobs- teacher, promoter, retail, free sample girl, hair model, etc. Including being one of those "Do you like comedy?" people in Times Square (though that lasted a little over a week). Currently, I help do PR for a record label.
I personally would like to bring a tortoise onto the stage, turn it into a racehorse, then into a hat, a song, a dragon and a fountain of water. One can dare anything in the theatre and it is the place where one dares the least. -Ionesco

I'm director of marketing at a high tech company.  I decided not to pursue stage management as my primary career about 10 years ago, but I still stage manage on a regular basis.

I'm currently a contract PSM for my alma matter. When I'm not SMing, I have a very good friend who throws me contract HR work.

I substitute teach.  The school system i sub for is super-flexible in regards to taking time off and still being actively employed as a sub, so I can take as much time off as I need when I'm SMing a show.

I currently work as the After-School Care Director at a private preparatory school. Although I kind of fell into education with younger children, it's amazing how much those SM muscles get used in my classroom.

Interesting to see a 2nd substitute teacher on here.  I'm thinking about going pro with subbing.  It's such a great gig without the added stress of grades, and parents, and conferences, and lesson plans....and the kids are always happy to see me :D

The pay is so great too!  I can't wait for the school system to get back on its feet so I can start benefiting from being a sub AND doing what I love....

I go to high school, which is very inflexible when it comes to time off for a show.  ;) Most of my teachers understood that I don't really prioritize homework during tech week, though, which was lovely. I hope my teachers next year are as understanding.
Don't be so reverent about reality. It's just a trick, done with mirrors.

I sell tickets at an entertainment venue.  Touring concerts, children's shows, local sports (basketball, hockey and football), and any other touring show that would seat 19,000 people. It's a huge space.  Sometimes I get to see a concert for free.  At least it's in the entertainment industry and I like what I do.
