The Ring Cycle on PBS this week
« on: Sep 11, 2012, 02:12 am »
PBS is airing the four operas of the Ring Cycle (the Robert Lepage production at the Met) this week on "Great Performances". There's a great documentary on right now about the making of this production and all of the automation used. Really interesting!

Side note- If you haven't seen "Sing Faster: The Stagehand's Ring Cycle" check it out- it's a documentary about another production of the Cycle- focusing on the crew and the backstage operations- and is really fun to watch.

The documentary was fascinating.  Loved the part where they showed the SM talking through the ending sequence and whether they'd be able to proceed when the automation broke.  And the artistry and precision required for those set moves.  Just incredible.

I think comparing Sing Faster and Wagner's Dream is so interesting. So little has changed even with the massive upgrades in technology!.

(Sidenote: They screened Wagner's Dream at Silverdocs this year, MB)

If anyone knows a place to find Wagner's Dream online, let me know. I'm really looking forward to seeing it, but I'm pretty sure it's not out in Canada yet. Classic. :p

Loved Sing faster!  Gives a sometimes unseen view of how a show comes together.

I loved Sing Faster!

I did wish though, that it was a little bit more of what the stagehands were actually doing and little bit less of them trying to explain the plot, as hilarious as that was. I was far more interested in what it's like to be the guy controlling the head of the dragon than hearing a bunch of crew members try to figure out Brunhilde's motivation.
You will have to sing for your supper & your mortgage, your dental coverage & your children's shoes, over & over again while people in desk jobs roll their eyes the minute you start to complain. So it's a good thing you like to sing.

I absolutely loved Sing Faster! (which is available on youtube)

I used Sing Faster in a high school stagecraft class several years ago and it inspired people to become theatre majors just because of how interesting the film is.  I would love to have been there in person

I hope that PBS will publish the DVD of the met performance.  I enjoy rewatching these type of documentaries and observing them from different perspectives.
