Hooray crafters!

I'm a pretty avid crafter of anything involving fiber - embroidery, crochet, some knitting, some sewing. I'm a member of a "Ladies Crafting Circle" comprised almost entirely of techies. We always have awesome conversation over yarn!

Anyone seen these? They're amazing for crocheting during backstage downtime (if you ever get any....). I bought them while I was run crew for a 2hr show with 1 set change. I think they also make knitting needles.

Ravelry is fabulous! I'm blackbird5685 there. Craftster is also a pretty awesome website for crafters. It's been one of my favorites for years.

These are fabulous.   They do make knitting needles as well.  They are great for backstage, for camping and for when you are watching a movie and everyone else wants to have the lights out, but you still want to craft.

Oh my goodness...  I think I've found what I'm giving as Christmas gifts this year - THANK YOU!

As for me, I feel like I'm not very creative/artistic...
I used to be quite the scrapbooker, but my current life has been so transient, that carting all that stuff became impractical...  Plus, I tend to keep my pictures on my computer and facebook...
I'm a very amateur crocheter - mostly blankets as baby shower gifts and scarves.  But I find I can only do it in the winter...  Just too hot in the summer to have all that yarn on my lap. (And knitting never worked for me...  my stitches would get too tight.)

But I am hoping to maybe check this out for an inspiring getaway (anyone been?):  http://www.snowfarm.org/

I know this thread is from last year but I'm just findng it now.

I don't knit or crochet, but I love to cross-stitch.  I typically buy the $20-$40 kits (either on sale, or with a coupon) from Michaels or JoAnn's.  It's easy to carry around and to do backstage or in the booth - a lot of crafts (I also paint, for instance) either require room to spread out, lots of materials, are potentially messy (I'd hate to have paint get on a costume!) or are difficult to start and stop.  I've always been scared that with knitting if I have to put down my needles all the stitches will fall off and/or I'll lose count!

Also, headlamps are the best things in the world!  I used to think it was too dark to do anything backstage (and my arm got tired of holding a flashlight over my book), and then I discovered headlamps and haven't looked back.  Not only are they fabulous during quick changes where you want to use both your hands AND be able to see the tiny little button/snap/clasp clearly, but also for crafting backstage during downtime.  I have one that tilts, so I usually keep it tilted down (and keep it off when I'm not using it) so that I don't blind anyone who looks at me.

I learned to knit a couple of years ago and had a great time with it, it's a fantastic activity for ASM's in particular.  It keeps you so much more involved in the show when you're backstage than, say, reading, because it's not a language-based activity.

I'm almost through all twenty of the Patrick O'Brian novels and am starting to research model ship-building.  I'm very interested in the detail-oriented fine work involved.  Maybe I can start building my own models in 2012.

Since I wrote this post eons ago, I have also learned to knit. I am now totally addicted to it and have spent many a night sitting in bed with my knitting saying, "just one more row and then I'll go to sleep"

As for preventing my stitches from falling off, I use circular needles. If you pull the ends of your needles and squish the yarn onto the plastic cord, it makes the project pretty travel-safe.
