I laughed when I read that - it was great!

As for the muppets - I thought that there was a rat who was the SM for a long time - complete with headset.  At least in one of the movies I swear it was a rat - I've always wanted to find a stuffed one, especially if it had the headset.

legit SMs in Winter Passing, a new film -

they have two backstage scenes - and the SMs are actually doing SM work and reacting in a reasonable SM-y kinda way -

cool

Has anyone seen the commercial for that deoderant, where the fashion designer's assistant is bringing in his black Italian silk? (the point of the commercial is that she's carrying it under her arm and she's wearing a sleeveless  black dress..and there's no deoderant marks on anything).

Anyway, when my parents were visiting me a couple weeks ago and we were watching TV and that commercial came on, they both said, "oh look, that's you!"

No really a stage manager in media, but apparently my parents associate my job with running errands for people, wearing black, and anything black in general.  =)

Plus the assistant makes a snarky comment at the end of the commercial, sometime to the effect of, "I like to keep my boss on his toes."

=)
Stage managing is getting to do everything your mom told you not to do - read in the dark, sit too close to the TV, and play with the light switches!

Just went to see Game 6 this weekend with a couple of my friends (fellow theater majors). We went because it's being distributed by one of my friend's father's company and he was really pushing to get as many people as possible there for the first weekend, but it actually turned out to be a really good movie on top of that.

Anyways, it's got more of a theater setting than the baseball setting the ads show, and there's a couple scenes where the stage manager shows up. I'd call it a fairly positive portrayal -- massive actor crisis, and she manages to keep mostly calm despite hints of obvious panic.

Anyways: good movie, stage manager appears in it and looks good doing so. Yay!

I did a show called Durang 6 where we did 6 short plays by Christopher Durang.  I felt so special during Actors Nightmare when the Stage Manager is on at the beginning calling places and 'preparing the set' for the show.  It's a small little piece of the show but it just felt so great watching the actor do that!  It's always fun to see Stage Manager's as a part in a show or film.

I did a show last summer called Durang 6, where we did 6 short plays by Christopher Durang.  We did Actor's Nightmare, and in the beginning there is a 'Stage Manager' part who is getting the set ready for the 'performance'.  I loved watching this because it was just so fun to see the role of a stage manager played as a part. It's always so fun to see productions or films where they are stage managers.  It makes you feel special and appreciated!

I enjoy watching "Sing Faster: The Stagehands Guide to the Ring Cycle".  It focusses on the IATSE crew running the Ring Cycle and is beautifully edited with the opera music in the background as they change the sets, etc and balance their checkbooks or play poker backstage...The stage managers are heard and seen a lot.  I love watching/listening to them cue the dragon (like 4 people to move it back and forth, another inside operating the jaw), though the stage managers' voice drives me a little crazy...Lights GOOOOOOOooooo.  You wonder which part of the word "Go" the cue should be actually taken on.  And there must have been several stage managers for the various parts of the cycle (or on separate channels?), as there is at least one male and one female voice heard.

I own it now, but first watched it on Netflix.  I'd highly recommend adding it to your queue if you're a member.

That was a cool "Sex and the City" with the fashion show. In the movie "The Bodyguard" near the end when they are at some awards show you see all kinds of backstage hands. Then I believe it was a SM who asked the bodyguards to turn off their radios. Then the SM or ASM, whatever position they held, came into the dressing room to call Miss Houston to the stage, I so forgot what her name was in the movie. Then you see the SM or ASM getting Miss Houston and the other presenter onto the steps that they will walk down to get on stage. It was cool. I love seeing movies with like a performer or something that shows the backstage action. Great Topic!
~pay it forward~

I spent a lot of time watching the stage managers work in the movie The Company with Neve Campbell.

Those stage managers are actual stage managers, in fact the actual stage managers at the time for the Joffrey. (The movie was based on the Joffrey and most of the dancers were in the Joffrey company at the time).

The comedian Kathy Griffin mentions the stage manager for an awards show in her act, how Ryan Secrest was going to do something off the script, and the stage manager overhears him and calls him on it.  It's really funny how she does it.

I don't know if you have seen the movie Prairie Home Companion which has an odd amount of big names in it, for a small movie... but most of the movie is a live on stage radio show and there is a very prominent role of a stage manager and I actually know the stage manager of the real radio show (it was filmed on location in St. Paul MN at the Fitzgerald theatre) who got to give input to the movie star playing the stage manager.  Also a great play with a stage manager is Skin of Our Teeth where the "stage manager" interrupts the show because the actor isn't saying the right lines.

It's not exactly recent, but there is a stage manager in the wonderful play Six Characters in Search of an Author.  In the 70's they made a terrible TV movie out of it (where it was set on a soundstage instead of in a theater).

Also, in Knocked Up the main girl was working as sort of a stage manager type for E! before her bosses put her on TV.

EDIT: I can't believe I forgot this one - the stage manager of the pageant in Little Miss Sunshine. ("We're walking. ...As fast as we can.")

Sometime in the opening sequence of the movie Chicago, there is the Stage Manager.

I once searched the imdb (Internet Movie Database) for both "stage manager" and "stagehand" and I was surprised how frequently they show up as minor characters.
