Sleeping in your theatre
« on: Mar 11, 2013, 11:09 am »
I had a stage run for my doubled cast this morning and we open tonight, so I've got a long gap in between shows. I'm going to walk out for some fresh air, but also asked colleagues where was a good place in the building to take a nap.

There's a foam mattress on the fly floor which was suggested, but maybe the green room sofa would be better.

Where do you nap in your theatre ?

In the [clean] towel hamper.

A few years ago, I wrote a blog post about the opening of The House of Dancing Water and all the places we took naps.

Under counters!

In college, I would sleep under the counter in our CAD lab. so long as the booth I'm working out of is clean and I won't pull something out of somewhere by laying under there, I'll sleep under the booth counter.

If I am unable to find a counter, I sleep on the set. Especially if the set is comfy.

Hammock on an empty fly batten.  Fly it in between shows on a two show day for the most comfortable nap in history.  Obviously this only works if the space is quiet between shows.

Nobody's mentioned the Equity cot yet?  :)

At one theater I worked at, there was a great spot in the booth that was above the dimmer rack for some nice white noise and warmth.
I personally would like to bring a tortoise onto the stage, turn it into a racehorse, then into a hat, a song, a dragon and a fountain of water. One can dare anything in the theatre and it is the place where one dares the least. -Ionesco

I can be found in the greenroom in between shows on two show days... we have a really great couch and this nice blanket that reminds me of my grandmother's house. So comfy.

Of course not....have you tried to wrestle the Equity cot out of the hands of a diva?

Green-room sofas, under the sound console, the couch in the TD's office, on a pile of old soft goods in the steam-tunnel, on beds and sofas on the set, and stretched out across several seats in the house (provided they don't have arms).

As a matter of fact, here's a shot I took of 3/5ths of my cast and my ASM on the dinner break of the second 10-of-12 several years ago. These seats weren't great to sit on, but pretty nice to stretch out on!

Notice who is NOT sleeping there? Me. *sigh*

I had a show in univeristy where there was a love seat, two beds and a mattress, I would usually sleep on the love seat between scene changes. I had a really long break, and the other ASM would come wake me up, being tall the love seat wasn't the best, but it was extremely comfortable, and the only furniture on my side of the stage.

Obviously I wasn't fully asleep, in case of an emergency I was able to react quickly.

We have 2 equity cots, and the actors pretty much schedule themselves in shifts. "I'll go to dinner now, then when I come back at 6 you can go to dinner and I'll take a nap." Leaves no room for us poor SMs.
You will have to sing for your supper & your mortgage, your dental coverage & your children's shoes, over & over again while people in desk jobs roll their eyes the minute you start to complain. So it's a good thing you like to sing.

Slept on our office couch last week...thankfully they're very comfortable. I had to crash overnight between tech days since there was a 15" difference in snowfall between my work and home....crazy New England! I usually have an overnight bag for these occasions in the winter that have a blanket, pillow, snacks and a change of clothes.

At my Univrsity the stage managers used to have an office with a big comfy couch. Many of us would slip away during the day and take a nap up there. Now, a professor has taken over that office and all the students have resorted to the Green Room couches.

On dinner break I can be found sleeping on the staircase behind my office. Yes. Stairs.

At least they are carpeted.

Atop a pile of drapes in the store room has always been my preferred location - I like to make a nice little nest and curl up.

I did have a flybar hammock in one venue with motorised flys which was quite nice... Not sure if I would do it in a venue with CW or hemp lines though.
