But, of course, there NEVER will be an emergency involving the children.  That would be against the rules.

I'm happy everyone is looking to their environment around them, but you missed all the really great stuff you get as the SM!

-Paycheck is over the Living wage. You won't have to manipulate or take short cuts when making your weekly/monthly budgets.

-Health insurance from the moment you're hired and not 12 weeks down the road.

-There is no fighting or reminding of the front office you are owed overtime. They simply know it and pay it happily.

Contracts always arrive weeks before the first day of preproduction, properly signed by the appropriate parties.

All items discussed at the interview/in the deal memo are correctly represented in the rider and/or LOA.

Reimbursement for cell phone costs, ground transportation and personal technology is automatically rider'ed in, and the employment packet contains proof of insurance for all personal technology used in support of the production (your laptop, your MS Office license, your cell phone, iPod, speakers, iPad, video camera...) as well as a kit fee.

The director always knows who he wants to call two days in advance (and never changes his mind). The rehearsal hotline records this information itself.

And while we're on the subject of fancy SM tech, actor prompts are handled by a souped up version of Apple's Siri, sign-ins are handled by Google Latitude, and glow-LEDs are proximity-aware and only light up when an actor w/RFID chip in his/her costume is nearby.

Printers will all have the same power sources and have the same ink, they will have scheduled maintenance, they will work with any computer and not need new drivers installed, and they will be leased so they can be replaced when the technology improves.

The rehearsal area has wireless internet.  All of the stage manager's technological devices always have a great internet connection.
