Rehearsals are Like Relationships
« on: Nov 14, 2010, 10:00 pm »
Last night on twitter some folks and I were making all sorts of comparisons between relationships and rehearsals.

For example:

The Honeymoon: It's the first few days of rehearsal and everything feels fresh and exciting. But who knows - in a few weeks all the things that are currently endearing might be grating on me.

The Sugar Daddy: I've hooked up with shows before that I wasn't interested in at all, simply for the money.

The Affair: You love the show, but aren't telling anyone about it.

What other relationships have you had with a show?

The Walk of Shame: I thought doing this show/project was a good idea when I agreed to it, but I felt dirty afterwards.
Companions whom I loved and still love, tell them my song.

The Pity 'Lay': The director/producer/whoever was at their wits end trying to find a stage manager, but to no avail. I felt bad for them and thought to myself, "I'm doing it to help them out, where's the harm in that?"

The Trophy Wife: It may not be the smartest show around, but it'll make me look so good!

and, the opposite of that...

The Nerd: Intellectually a very clever show that is rather rough around the edges, aesthetically.
[The SM is] a very gifted, slightly eccentric master mechanic [keeping] a cantankerous, highly complex machine running at top efficiency by talking to it, soothing it, & lovingly fixing whatever is broken.

The Trick: Like a prostitute, you took the gig for the money, and have no interest what so ever in the project except the paycheck.

The Old Standby- even if nothing else is panning out, I KNOW there'll be a Christmas show somewhere to run.
I personally would like to bring a tortoise onto the stage, turn it into a racehorse, then into a hat, a song, a dragon and a fountain of water. One can dare anything in the theatre and it is the place where one dares the least. -Ionesco

The Rebound: the show you take because you've been unemployed for so long and any show seems better than no show when you are alone, er, I mean, out of work.

The Summer Fling: there's no long term reward (it doesn't pay great, it's not going to move your career forward), but it sure is a WHOLE LOTTA FUN ;)

The Make it past the milestone: you want to quit that long running show, but decide to stay together for Christmas, or the 1,000th performance.

"The One Night Stand" - that event you did that may have been flashy or just awkward, but was over almost as soon as it began.

2nd Marriage - The show you inherited from another SM - complete with book, actors and scenery.

Online Dating - Signing a contract having never seen the venue.

Shotgun Wedding - The show you have to take in a season in order to get the show you really want.

Barroom Betty - Every company in the country has done her, you'll get your turn eventually.

Brokeback Mountain - Summerstock.  You vanish for the summer, do plenty of unspeakable things, but for some reason you keep coming back.

Jailbait - A new, juicy, controversial script that is guaranteed to cause a huge amount of community outrage.

The nice Jewish boy - the rare show that you feel comfortable inviting your extended family to see.

the hotel hook-up: the fun gig you took on the outskirts of town, because it's easy, fits in your schedule, is just a one time
thing, and is great break from the other show you really don't like but are contracted to be with till it's
done or "death do you part".

I can't help it, I love this category - PSMKay, maybe a "like" button needs to have a global option! You guys are way too clever....but it's such a delight to watch that cleverness at work!

The May-December Relationship: When the cast is either substantially less or more experienced than you.

Variant: Interracial relationship, when the cast is predominantly of a different race than you.

PS: loebtmc, you can "like" the entire thread by liking the very first post.  It doesn't add your "like" to every post, but it does register your like a little differently.  Thanks! :)
