It's about time to be thinking of summer internships.

What should I be looking for in a summer internship?  Smnetwork seems to only have reviewed a few internships and Santa Fe is the only one related to opera.  I know that internships are invaluable to stage managers to learn more about the field and network.  I am excited about moving to a new place and being completely absorbed in a production.  If you have any words of advice about internships, please pass it along.

What do you want to get out of an internship? Do you want to get experience in other areas of theatre, or concentrate solely on stage management? Are you interested solely in opera?

I think looking through the internships already reviewed can give you a sense of what kind of things to consider. Even if a company you're looking at is not reviewed, asking yourself "Will this internship help me network? Am I going to learn something new? Do I want to work on a wide variety of productions, or concentrate on one particular kind of production?" etc will help you figure out what road to go down. Then, do research on the companies you're applying to. See if what they offer fits the experience you're searching for.

In terms of actually finding internships- there are many options out there. Off the top of my head, Glimmerglass and Wolf Trap have summer opera internships. A quick google search will find a lot more.

I have worked for two different Opera Companies with Summer internships that I could tell you about... I didn't participate in them (I was in Company Management and then ASM as opposed to being an intern) so that is why I didn't review them in the internship section, but I was aware of what they entailed. They were Utah Festival Opera and Musical Theatre in Logan UT and Opera Saratoga in Saratoga Springs PA. You can send me a PM with any specific questions you may have and I will try to answer them.

Good Luck!
