SMing Rep
« on: Mar 04, 2010, 12:53 pm »
Ok, so I just got a job SMing at a Shakespeare festival in rep this summer.  I am one of the four stage managers (one for each show) and I haven't even worked in rep like this before.

I was just hoping to get a few pointers, on how to be one of four stage managers.  How to work with the other stage managers?  Basically anything!

Coordination and communication.  What is one production using that others can also use (props, set, costumes, lighting, etc.)? Are actors also in rep?  Is the crew/artistic staff also being shared? If so are schedules being coordinated? Do you have regular production meetings scheduled  for all shows as a group as well as individual shows?

Last time I worked in Rep at a summer stock we had one PSM,  two stage managers and three assistants for three shows and three green shows.  The PSM was in charge of overall scheduling and in charge of the other stage managers.  We had a daily scheduling meeting to finalize rehearsal schedules and work through new conflicts.  The PSM was also in charge of setting tech schedules and days off and the like.  For me it was really interesting being part of such a large team of stage managers.  Each one of us did things differently, and had different styles, but we all had to produce the same paper work so it was easily read by everyone else in the company.  I felt like I had a large support system when I had things creep up and there was always someone to bounce an idea off of.

Best of luck in your summer experience and keep us posted on how it goes!
