Stage Managers and Unions

I am working on a project for a Stage Management class and I need some help, what unions do a stage manager have to be in if they are working on a musical on Broadway. THANKS!!

You don't have to be in any union, if you are working in a non-union company.  Many of the small and medium sized companies are non-union.  Some of the medium sized houses and pretty much all of the large houses are union.  They are represented by AGMA, the American Guild of Musical Artists.  That is the union you would have to join to work in a union house.

In response to your other post, which asks about musicals....

Some opera companies also produce musicals.  So then it depends if AGMA has an agreement with that company.  For example, I was on an AGMA contract when I did "A Little Night Music" but not when I did "Sweeney Todd" or "Porgy & Bess".  These are all rather common in opera repetoire.  Also things like Gilbert & Sullivan, etc. For more information about AGMA, go to www.musicalartists.org

Other companies producing musicals may or may not have Equity contracts.
