NEWBIES: Staged Readings
« on: Mar 28, 2008, 03:50 pm »
So I need some advice.

I am stage managing an equity staged reading next month and I have some concerns. First, this is the first equity show I have SM'd. Second, I have never worked a staged reading before. And third, it is a new play. I am not quite sure what I need to do for any of these things.

The people that hired me trust me and think I will do a great job. So maybe I am just stressing out more than I should but any advice would be helpful.

Thanks.

Staged Readings are great, because pre-production is short and sweet.

It is basically a complete show, with basic blocking, some basic audio (optional), some basic lighting (optional), some basic set (optional), some basic costumes (optional), and the actors don't need to learn their lines.

Staged readings often occur with new works to "try it out" on a small audience. Most staged readings I have been involved in have had 3 days or less of rehearsals and between 2 and 4 days of show, and are often in a black box theatre.

Generally, as these are works in process, you may expect to photocopy and distribute many script changes.  Some system for organizing and marking separate revisions would be helpful.

You probably should get yourself a copy of the Equity Stage Reading Guidelines if you haven't already (available from the Equity online library).  It will need to be posted at rehearsals.

Good reading.

My favourite parts (which might be contrary to some people's experience with readings):

"Rehearsal hours are limited to a maximum of 15 hours (20 hours for musicals) for rehearsals and actual Reading(s), such times to be at the Actor’s convenience."

"No sets, props, wigs, make-up, or costumes."

"Book in hand, no memorization, only minimum staging with no choreography permitted."

Good times -- have fun!

Piggybacking on Scott's post - definitely, after you read the AEA literature, check in with the director about what s/he envisions, to make sure that your understanding of minimal staging and production lines up with theirs.

I love readings - doing and watching - hope you have a great time!
