First Show SMing at my College
« on: Jan 21, 2009, 09:12 am »
Hi there, it's been a while since I've posted.

I'm currently a student at COD, a great community college with a lovely theatre program.  This is my first year and I've already worked an equity show for a company they host at the school AND I've ASMed a show that was on the mainstage, no small feat for a freshman!  However I am now moving into my first stage managing position at this school. I SMed in high school where I was brought in during tech week to call the show, but that's the extent of it.

Because of my previous ASM duties I did sit in for the rehearsals, but I'd love a few tips on how to keep things going smoothly. My last SM was a complete disaster and I found myself trying to cover her without exactly knowing what I was supposed to be doing.

Thanks!

There are lots of Stage Managing books out there (amazon.com) that I found very helpful during my college days. The books can work as a "how to" guide and most go in order of how a production goes together.  I would suppliment the books with many of the threads on this site that deal with specific questions and issues.

Congratulations on SMing your first college show!  I second what SMRose said about getting a good book.  The big tip that I have for keeping things running smoothly is just remain calm and cool.  Also, take lots of notes...even if you think you will remember things.

Also, I did some work with the theater program at College of DuPage prior to moving to New York.  It's a great program with nice facilities..and I love Jon and Don.  They are great resources and you should use them if you have any questions or concerns.  Feel free to PM me if you have any questions, it's been awhile since I've been there but I keep up with some of those people still.

As a new(er) college SM myself, I recently picked up the Kelly book - "Backstage Guide to Stage Management" and have found it both helpful and easy to read.

I found this link years ago and bookmarked it. I remember when I first PSMed in college. Hope it helps.
