PROPS: The Clean House
« on: Sep 14, 2015, 01:51 pm »
The college I teach at is doing the play "The Clean House". There are a couple of props that I'm trying to see what we can use.

The set is an unit set with all white furniture that has to get dirty every night and clean up after the performance.

One prop is a spice that is thrown from the balcony onto the white furniture. It's supposed to be yellow. It could hit some actors.
Another prop is a plant with dirt that is spilled onto the white rug.

We do not have laundry facilities, and will have to purchase cleaning supplies. It's only for five shows.

Any help would be appreciated! Thank you!

We did this show a few years back.  I recall that we painted the rug on the floor--easy clean up with a sweep and mop after each performance.  I believe we avoided soiling the furniture by aiming away from it.  If I remember correctly, we also upholstered in white pleather--again, easier clean up than fabric.

For the spice, we used confetti. Really. And the dirt was dirt - but it was a few handfuls on top of a styro base holding a fake plant.

Also, you only need to use 2-3 real apples, the rest can be fakes.

A bunch of us have done the show, you might check the BTDT and see what ideas other people had.

These are great ideas. My director loves all things sparkly, so the confetti might be perfect.

I'll look in the BTDT thread.

Don't know if this is coming in too late to be of use... for the first, we used fake mulch that was made of rubber.  For the yellow spice, we small yellow granules of some sort that I believe were yellow rubber ground down to almost a powder.  Both came up quickly for the reset on two-show days.

I have also used rubber mulch in place of dirt- not for this particular show, but for 2 other shows I've done. Worked well and looks realistic.
You will have to sing for your supper & your mortgage, your dental coverage & your children's shoes, over & over again while people in desk jobs roll their eyes the minute you start to complain. So it's a good thing you like to sing.

Coir (coconut fiber) is also a good dirt substitute with easy clean-up - just sweep and re-pot. Wet it occasionally so it doesn't dry into a powder (because it's super super absorbent). You buy it compressed into a brick, so you get a LOT.

We actually just closed Clean House here two days ago. For the spice we used corn starch hit with a yellow light--easy to sweep up or vacuum. The dirt in the plant were small cork pieces, which again were easy to sweep up
