Will,

Did you find out what Yale short hand is?

My SM seminar professor in undergrad was a person who'd taught stage management at Yale for a long time and was semi-retired.  In two years she never mentioned a Yale short hand.

Just curious in case a director springs that up on me.

Just tell said director that "Yale Shorthand" is their proprietary name for "the most efficient way to do things"!  ;)

Maybe what we should be looking at is not "what" Yale shorthand is.  Obviously it's not something that's terribly significant.  There are plenty of experienced SMs here and it seems not one of us has really even heard mention of it, let alone use it.

After many years of SMing I realize that we all do make up our ouwn blocking notaion...my director mentioned this and I figured IF there was something out there I would like to see what it is so that I could possibly steal somethings from it but now I think we have collectivly decided that it does not exist and am moving on...thank you all for your input I will go back to my stealing shinnanigainz and make soemthing up hahah  8) I hope you are all doing well on your respective projects

Sorry if this is an old topic or whatever, but most directors I have worked with want me to do this football chart sort of thing.  What does everyone think about that?  I prefer the old style of blocking (Macbeth x CS)

I'm not sure I understand why the Director cares at all how the blocking is written down so long as it is written down and can easily be read back to the director or actor.

Blocking Notation is Blocking Notation and every individual stage manager does it differently and THEIR own way-

While this is true in the real world, i would not be surprised to learn that a particular program taught a very specific blocking system.....there are certainly plenty of codified blocking systems that seem like heiroglyphics to outsiders.....
