Introductions / Always looking for advice
« Last post by SideGig_SM on Feb 04, 2022, 06:26 pm »
I'm introducing myself to this forum. I am an elementary music teacher by day and my side gig from time to time is Stage Managing. I get lots of compliments on my stage managing abilities, but I have no formal training, so I'm always looking for advice or better ways to do things. I've stage managed, asm'd, produced, worked crew, etc mostly in community theatre settings, but recently have been asked to stage manage at a local branch campus of a pretty big University. I'm pretty proud of that fact.

Trivia/Fact: I stage managed the premiere production of The Scarlet Letter: A Musical at Theatre Harrisburg. The musical was a collaboration between college friends and developed at workshops in Boston, NYC, and DC before being fully produced for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The collaborators expanded the show into a two-act show with full orchestra and staging. It was an AWESOME experience.

I'm looking forward to connecting with other stage managers on this forum.

Introductions / New student SM - happy for any and all advice

Hi everyone,

New ish stage manager here. I've been doing technical backstage theatre for the past couple of years, and have ASMed 2 plays and 1 musical in 2021.

When reading through how to write a welcome article, I decided to go with a fact. The fact is that our school seemingly never has budget to buy anything for crew yet can pull of the most extravagant costumes and set. anyways, I'm happy to be here :p

Introductions / been on hiatus since 9/11 - this year I'm back!

Hello -

New-ish member Pam West here.  My trail to PSM land has been long and circuitous.  Right out of college I did some small SM jobs and then got in as a PA in an equity house for two shows (worked with Mindy Paige Davis Page on Company).  Then I got married, my husband got laid off, and 9/11 happened all in the space of 2 weeks.  For the sake of our little traumatized family I took a permenent job as a medical secretary and did that for a decade, during which we had two kids.  Took some time off to be a full-time parent, worked as a traveling family photographer for a few years, returned to medical secretary land.  Then COVID hit and I lost my job due to [vaguely gestures at everything] stuff.  This past summer, I started working with our local community theatre and realized how much I missed theatre.  So now I'm back at it and trying to rebuild my path to a professional SM career after a 20-year break.

Funny story - husband and I produced a musical variety show for our church's youth group.  It ended up being a riff on The Voice called The Choice with the four judges being the 3 members of the Christian trinity plus 1 representative from down below.  The theology was a little crooked but the show was a hoot!  The kids created fake ad breaks for things like Real Housewives of Jerusalem.  Ten years later my husband still plays in the band that was formed for this one off show.

Thanks for having me.  I welcome any advice for someone both new and old-hat in this game.

All the best and stay safe!

I did a radio play through a LORT company in THE WEEK that SAG-AFTRA and AEA finally decided to talk with each other. They fought over jurisdiction, so definitely contact a union and ask. If it is NEVER connected to an Equity theatre, it could be strictly SAG-AFTRA (or non union). We did ours recording one person at a time, and we sent out sound/mic kits to people who didn't have their own setup. Then my sound designer painstakingly edited it all together with FANTASTIC extra sound effects. I got word last week they are re-releasing it, and I'm getting another chunk of payment as a result. Yay! But if they need to record, and your company is sending equipment, make sure you have a cheat sheet of how the device is run and/or (recommended) a sound person is in the call for setups too. We actually would do one setup the night before or morning of, then call the director into the Zoom when ready. We did Dropbox requests for them to send files, and had a naming protocol too (but also each had their own folder it went to to make it easier on our end. Hopefully yours is something you can simply all grab at once from the sound person being there, or recording Zoom - but remember that Zoom may "clip" voices if two talk at once. Oh, and to do ours one at a time, we had the recorder use a headset/earbuds so that the other person was in their ears, but the mic only picked up their own voice.

Anyway for the attachment issue to get resolved? None of the attachments open on any of these posts.

Agreed on jurisdiction, always check your rep.

I've mentored a few student projects like this and also supervised an original podcast release. Some tips:
Make sure your audio team has all the resources.
Schedule your call times with more time than you think you need. It takes longer, takes always go over, and you can't generally record more than one person effectively without all the right things coming together.

I would check with SAG/AFTRA as well as an AEA Representative. As the saying goes "Call Your Rep"
