Employment / Re: The importance of on line presence
« on: Dec 03, 2015, 03:57 pm »
One of the things I like about my about.me contact page is that my email address is not actually on the page- there's just a contact box that people can use, but don't actually get my email from. I haven't gotten any spam through that, as far as I can tell.

I've found about.me is a great and very easy way to have a simple contact page! Mine is about.me/katiemeade if anyone is interested in checking it out. I have a few things linked- you can send me an email, check out my linkedin and About the Artists page. Best of all, there's zero coding involved. I opt not to have my phone number available but that's an option too.

Funnily enough, a couple of weeks ago a show that's renting my theatre came in and has an astroturfed set- looks like they're just using regular spike tape as well.

Employment / Re: Quotes for SMing Events

I would figure out what you're comfortable being paid hourly, then add it up. I usually do $15-25 per hour for events depending on what they want me to do. My market is also NYC, so the local rate may vary a bit, but shouldn't be too much difference.

Good point KMC! If only I could get job boards to make separate "volunteering" sections.

Follow-up-- do the non-union jobs posted usually pay?

My alma mater, Marymount Manhattan College, has a few prompt books in their archives that were donated. I can't remember which shows, but if you contact Mary Brown at the library you might be able to arrange to come in and see them.

Thanks for sharing- this is awesome!

Especially if you have understudy rehearsal coming up!

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: Where to Start...?
« on: Oct 28, 2015, 04:18 am »
Start combing through OffStageJobs and Playbill jobs now. Look into internships, summer stock, anything that seems interesting. If you are able, go to SETC or the USITT convention-- SETC in particular has a job fair that you may find useful and I know friends who've had great experience networking and interviewing at both. Either way, your best bet is research research research. When I got out of school I was lucky to grab a temp job that was tangentially theatre-related, but did not get back into SMing until later in the year- this is almost entirely because I did not start sending in application soon enough (summer stock and long-term internships start posting ads Jan-March, generally). Because I live close to NYC and had some great connections, I landed on my feet. Speaking of that, don't feel shy about asking friends and mentors if they know of anything you should apply for/anyone you should talk to.

Because I went to college in Manhattan, a lot of SM friends have stayed there, but I also know a ton of people go where the work takes them when they first start out- a friend has been going from gig to gig throughout the country for about 2 years now. It just depends on what you think works for you.

And- speaking as someone who left school 2 years ago and is still with her parents- even if you move home, you won't necessarily lose momentum, especially in a city like San Fransisco where they have a fairly large arts community. It's just a matter of how hard you're working and how lucky you get, really.

Coordinate with your SM when work should get done-- as in, make sure you aren't planning your blackout check during fight call, etc. I agree, mostly I talk to LDs, but in college I remember time mix-ups being the biggest thing the ME and I needed to deal with.

Also, I would say don't be afraid of pictures. Obviously don't crash everyone's inbox with a gigantic spread of them, but a quick phone shot of "hey this prop broke in a really weird way, please see picture," is helpful if it's truly odd to describe.

The Hardline / Re: Visit from My AEA Business Representative

When I worked in the NYC offices I learned there were reps who went to the first rehearsal meeintg for every show on a certain contract level within the city (Broadway for sure, I want to say LORT and probably most Off-Broadway- not sure about anything else). Then when I was PAing at a LORT theatre, I know the rep came for the meeting every first rehearsal- obviously this is different outside of NYC, but around here it's pretty common. I never saw the deputy badges though!
