What should be put in the space that says "Principals or Singers or Dancers?" What category, how many, etc?

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Re: Being "Written Up"
« on: Oct 14, 2007, 09:43 am »
I've had to write up actors before. I never put the details in a reh/performance report. I do a formal write up letter and make three copies - one for the actor, one for me, and one for the producer to put on file. I also inform the PM of the situation.

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Re: Word Use
« on: Sep 13, 2007, 11:57 pm »
completely ditto what kmc307 said (all 3 comments)

i usually dont have an issue with "my," but in speaking with the cast about the set, i wouldnt use the word.
i try to refer to show personel and space as mine when speaking with people outside of the show.

i like to use stage LED markers. i even use them in straight shows.

remember: a social drink with a cast is one thing, getting druink is another. know the line. also, if they're going too far, it's best to remove yourself from the situation.

i personally think it's fine to go out and be social with your cast, as long as you know your boundaries.

The Hardline / Re: Equity "half-hour"
« on: Jul 22, 2007, 08:27 pm »
like everyone else has said, check your individual contract and contact your rep.

i'm working an SPT contract which states: "During “half-hour” the Actor shall be permitted to prepare for
the performance without the distraction of non-company backstage visitors
and without invasion for notes and/or rehearsal, except for last minute
emergency replacement rehearsal. Each Actor shall receive an actual “half
hour” regardless of the time of the Actor’s call to places."

get your production manager/artistic director involved in the emails - always copy them when you're emailing the designer. that way when he doesn't respond, they know you did your part and they will get on him for a response.

where would you consider Philly? i think that it's big enough to warrant it's own designation.

Word. Use tables and set margins - print to PDF.

is this a musical? if so, i always take the first vocal rehearsals as my opportunity to learn the names. i look around the room while they're working and try to get all of the names straight.

Employment / Re: To tattoo or not to tattoo
« on: Dec 29, 2006, 09:48 pm »
i have one on my ankle so easily covered. i know there are places that wont hire someone with a visible tattoo - so if that's your dream job, it's definately something to think about.
that being said, if you want something on your wrist, you can always cover it with a watch.

Employment / Interviewing at a University
« on: Oct 11, 2006, 04:36 pm »
I'm interviewing for a position at a university. It is not specifically stage management, more production management with building supervisor duties. Does anyone have any advice going into the interview?

on the first page with the director and designers.

please note that "SM team" does not just mean the SM - it includes the ASMs. in the scenario i gave above, the 4 people on the SM team split so that 2 were taking care of the actors and director while the other two took care of the technical elements. during the run, i would assume that both ASMs would be backstage (since you dont usually need one in the booth during runs) at which point the ASM previously working with the cast could take care of actors. obviously, if the SM was Equity, they would not be doing the set changes without the proper compensation, but that does not mean that they shouldnt know exactly how the piece works if they are backstage during the run.

one theatre i worked at had an issue with some outside people getting the attached reports in a readable format. the solution was making sure the word document had .doc after the file name - never had any problems after that.

personally, i send my reports as an attachment and give hard copies to anyone who requests them. i have always found issues in formatting when people copy and paste into an email.
