Tools of the Trade / Re: Google Docs.
« on: Mar 24, 2015, 09:28 pm »
Yes, Google docs is MAGIC! I also like that you can manage the editing rights for other people. Sometimes it's usueful to share a doc like a contact sheet but only let others view instead of everyone having editing powers. I'm not a huge fan of the app as it's small on my phone for editing but in a pinch, it's easy to quickly double check something.

I guess they will do it Hunger Games style.

Ha! Yes, I agree, it's a bit off-putting and does sound like they got burned at one point. But I'm intrigued... I'll let you know if it turns out Hunger Game style or not. :)

Welcome to SMNetwork! Hope you find the forum helpful and best of luck finishing up your BA!

I'm actually very interested in the Orlando area. Do you like the area?

I usually keep it very short on the phone. Chances are a laundry list of the obvious things they should do when they arrive sometimes isn't received well. My response is, "Thank you for letting me know. Please see me as soon as you arrive. How soon will you be here?" They respond. And I say again, "Please see me when you arrive."

In the mean time, I alert anyone this may affect if they are going to be significantly late (sound, wardrobe). Once the person arrives and is standing in front of me, I give them the list of expectations/schedule changes.

Hope this helps!

No notice - no photos.  Plain and simple!

With today's media world literally in our hands with smartphones, I have a no phone policy in rehearsals. I agree that it is distracting and can be very annoying to others who are doing their best to stay focused. I also find it unprofessional. One of the places I worked had a strict no backstage photo policy which came about when some costumed characters found themselves in a very strange position in the dressing room and the photo wound up on a social media site.  Needless to say, that did not go over well.

Social media can make or break someone's career.  Take the taco licker for instance - he was fired after social media circulated his meant-to-be-funny image.  While it's not my job to police social media as the stage manager, it is my job to make the rehearsal space a safe working environment that gives actors the freedom to try new things and not be self-counscious of John posting some crazy image from rehearsal that they were unaware was taken. Same goes for unfinished designs; it's a disservice to the designer.

I love them all.  But I laughed the hardest (and relived many moments) when I got to "waiting for crew members to get on stage for a set change." Oh, and "when excel freezes."

My first thought when I read your post was simply: ENJOY IT!!!

I agree with everyone else so I'm not going to write much more than this... Don't let your guard down and get caught sleeping on the job. At some point down the line, you will be in the throws of backstage pitch black chaos that will make up for this glorious time.

How often do you have to swim in the job?

Depends on your venue.  I had to prove I could get myself to the edge of the pool and get out of the water on my own. I will also add that I'm not a good swimmer, doggy paddle is perfectly acceptable.  Some venues don't require a swim test, but that is one of the questions on the application.

What are SEA grooming standards?  No visible tattoos?  No more piercings than just one in each ear?

No visible (obscene) tattoos, no gauges, one piercing in each ear is fine, i don't think men are allowed earrings, one ring per hand (exception is a wedding band and engagement ring), men are clean shaven unless they are hired with facial hair, men can not have excessively long hair, wearing the uniform as designed, black or white shoes with matching socks.

Will they take someone from the UK? Please?

You'd have to have the proper paperwork to legally work in the United States, but to answer your question, yes! But, they do not provide moving expenses to relocate.

Seasonal: You work 10 months out of the calendar year.  So that means you will be laid off two months out of the year, and they will not be two consecutive months.  Chances are good though that your lay off months will be in the early part of the year.

Good questions!

I've been offered an internship position that provides me with a room in either a 2 or 4 bedroom apartment.  I have a cat, and while I don't have to bring her (my boyfriend adores her), I would be really sad without her.  Has anyone been in this kind of position?  Were you allowed to have your cat?

Depending on what type of apartment (on a college campus somewhere, for example), they may have a very strict no pet policy.  If it's not a college setting though, you might ask your company manager about the living situation and see if you can pay a pet deposit.  The flip side of it though, if you don't get to meet your roommates before the summer starts, you run the risk of making enemies really fast if they are allergic or aren't pet people.

As the op for this topic, my situation as changed and I'll be working at home with my pup while my husband is away at a festival.  After much thought, and even checking on extended stay-pet friendly suites, we had decided our pup would stay with family and we'd provide all his food/vet care/etc.
