I'm still very new to all of this, so whenever I see posts like "yeah I casually interned at Arena and Second Stage and Wicked and MTC" from undergrads/grads, I freak out a little bit and feel like I'm way too behind to ever "catch up," so to speak.

You are not behind! I promise. We all have different backgrounds and no one way is the 'right' way. Trust in your skills and always try to learn something from whatever situation you find yourself in next.

Welcome fellow southerner! I'm curious as to what school you're going to, message me if you want to. I'm originally from Arkansas, worked in Oklahoma, followed by Texas, was in Alabama while my husband was in grad school, and know professors in Louisiana and Florida.

Hope you find the forum helpful!

There is plenty to learn from a small cast, and not only that, I'm guessing is probably a space you've not worked in before. I was really fortunate when I was in college; the department had just built a new theatre space, complete with an amazing black box and concert hall for the music department. I was spoiled right out of the gate, and haven't found anything like it since. Every space is different.

I agree with KMC in that an ASM resume credit is most likely better received. However, I can see how an internship and the chance at listing more shows on your resume at the end of the summer has great appeal. But that's just it, since you haven't actually applied for the internships, I'd go with the sure thing.

On a side note, have you asked the theater with the ASM offer if there is something else you could do in order to prolong the summer? Maybe they could use a hand in the box office or the scene shop? It never hurts to ask, and would expose you to another side of theatre.

Gigs usually mean hard decisions. When you want them, no one is hiring, and when you're booked, you'll get 5 more offers!

Best of luck!!

Tools of the Trade / Re: Purchasing Gaff and Spike Tape

I hear good things about Barbizon in Charlotte, North Carolina (for those of us in the southeast).

Barbizon has locations around the country and a few worldwide (London and Australia). I was in the Chicago store just yesterday to get spike tape. It was cheaper for me to go in the store vs. online.

Self-Promotion / Dead Man Walking

I started rehearsals this week for Dead Man Walking in Evanston, IL. It's a cast of 19 plus understudies. There is a lot of community engagement surrounding the show which I think will be really cool. We run April 16 to May 15 with a possible extension. Woohoo!! Yay work!

Welcome to the forum! We probably know many of the same people. I lived in Vegas a few years ago and know others that have worked on Absinthe. I'm sure you have lots of valuable insight to share.

Thanks for your comments. It was an easy fix of course. Onwards to rehearsal!

The Hardline / Umm, that's not my name.
« on: Feb 18, 2016, 05:17 pm »
Has anyone received an agreement that did not have you AEA name on it? I joined before I was married, so my AEA name is my maiden name, which is the name on my resume as well. However, my email address includes my married name, so I can see where it can be confusing. While I'm waiting to hear back from the producer about my name on the agreement, I wondered if anyone has come across trouble with AEA/legal names being different.

Hello fellow SM Superheroes!

I'm stage managing a new show which literally begins with no script. The director and actors will write it during the rehearsal process. There is a general concept that we are working with to help guide the scenes, but I have a feeling I'll be relying on audio recordings for awhile.

I was wondering if anyone else has done something like this? Any tips or tricks you learned along the way?

Edited to add topic tag- Maribeth

Employment / Job was Re-posted
« on: Apr 03, 2015, 03:50 pm »
I applied for a gig at least a month ago, if not longer, and noticed today that the job listing had been re-posted. Is it safe to think that the company did not feel they had enough qualified applicants or that they are possibly still in the process of scheduling interviews? Is it worth it to revamp my cover letter and submit my information again?

Thanks for your feedback!
