I third (or fourth) recommend The Backstage Handbook and Technical Theatre for Non-Technical People. I teach non majors at small college, and this book clearly explains design and tech.

I also have the book Theatrical Design and Production by J. Michael Gillette. It's a bit advanced for theatre 101, but I like how he organized the book and goes into depth on the design process.

The Green Room / Re: Easiest Group of People to Work With?
« on: Nov 11, 2014, 12:36 pm »
I'm always surprised when I work with kids. In general I found them to be the ones always on time, totally off book, and when rehearsing  they would always go 100%, even after explaining to them how they can just mark the scene.

However, their parents can be a different story..

My department chair sent me this link. Nice idea. I saw a video where it has a longer handle, thereby saving one's back while taping down.

Now, if it can fit any/all gaffee/spike tape sizes, then I would consider spending the $200 on it.

Self-Promotion / The Glass Menagerie

Endicott College, where I teach, has decided not to do a fall comedy and do a drama. Did they pick a drama or what?

I was skeptical at first, but it turned into a great production. We had such talent that we cast two Amandas and two Lauras, who take turns for each performance!
Also, this is the best looking show I've seen them do since I started here.

If you're around Beverly, MA this weekend come on by. With the trees changing colors and the ocean, everyday looks like a postcard!

The Hardline / Re: AEA LORT COSTUME FITTINGS
« on: Sep 25, 2014, 08:53 am »
Wow. I've been scheduling fittings the same way for years and I never had a problem.   Would this mean you would have to let the actors who had the fitting leave early at another rehearsal in the work week to make up the time?
Could you do a fitting after rehearsal? (still, it's one, you have four)

Also, there's no concrete line saying what is "consecutive" with rehearsal hours, so this is really dependant on what the Rep believes.

I'm not much of a help here. It's just you blew my mind before 9am.

Stage Management: Other / Re: Roadhouse SM

Start with the basics

-Keys-Are you getting some?
-Parking? Where can you park?
-Paperwork so you can get paid?
-Are you getting an ID?
-Any college policies you should be aware of (it's a college, they have lots of policies)

Then go into details

-Are you familiar with the space, if not have your supervisor go give you a tour. Become familiar with any lights, sound, av, rehearsal spaces, bathrooms, loading dock, green room, office, copy codes for copier, your computer,  how to order supplies through the college, laundry room, anything that is relevant to the space
-Is there a Technical Director or Production Manager working there? If not, are their tech specs available for the space?
-Inventory of what equipment supplies you are responsible for
-How will you hire people for crew? Is there already a list of people working? Any rules that you should know/timesheets you'll have to fill out for them.

As far as paperwork, it'll depend on what event that comes in. Some will create them and will give them to you, others you'll have to create (stage set up, list of any changes during the piece) etc. Some will bring their own stage manager, some won't. Before a group comes in sent an email or a phone call asking what they need.

It's going to be very overwhelming. My first day working at my job at a university I met about 40 people and couldn't remember where my office was.  Don't be afraid to ask any question, no matter how trivial you think it is. Trust your SM skills and you should be fine!

This is great, thanks for sharing! I also like that you can bring up the prompt book and follow along.

Also, I wish my hair and makeup looked as good as hers...

The Green Room / Re: Actor fired after confronting heckler
« on: Jun 04, 2014, 01:02 pm »
There are many articles out today about this incident, LA Times, The Wrap, Playbill - here's the one I plan on sharing with students in the fall, since it asks what can theater managers do to prevent things like this:

Excellent article.  Thanks for posting!

The Hardline / Palm Springs Follies

I always wondered about this place as I would always see jobs advertised for it. End of an era

On a recent show there were two microphones: one for backstage for backstage to hear, and one for audience. They were clearly marked, but there were many 2am nights and I was awfully tired.

I told the audience of a thousand or so that we were at five minutes.

I agree with everything that is said. I am very concerned about the attitude of the artistic staff and that they are choosing art over actors safety.
Other than a candle, I have little experience with an open flame onstage. Wouldn't this trigger the fire alarms in the theatre? This has bad written all over it..

If you do continue down this road, make sure the proper fire extinguishers are close by. Home depot also sells disposal fire extinguishers that are good for various types of fires for about $15 each. Also having buckets of sand and/or boxes of baking soda. I would also make sure house management/ushers post signs regarding open flames and give them extinguishers as well.

Good luck and keep us posted on how things go.

Quote
An actor calls from a payphone 14 miles from his car saying it broke down.
He's already walked 14 miles to the payphone; he can make it to the theatre in time.  ;)

(Sorry. Couldn't resist.)

I understand.  Alas, in real life he arrived just as the show was ending. The next day he went out and bought a cell phone.
