Self-Promotion / Teddy
« on: Dec 29, 2011, 03:49 pm »
Okay, it's not a show. "Teddy" is the name of my masters' thesis. Since I've been working on it for about a year I felt it best that he should have a name. He is also the longest "production" I have worked on.

"Teddy" opens in April. Closes in April.

Tools of the Trade / Software-packing a truck
« on: Sep 02, 2011, 11:41 am »
Are there any TD's (or people that know TD's) who toured and used any truck packing software?

If so, can anyone recommend any?

Thanks!

The Green Room / Need some inspiration
« on: Jul 13, 2011, 02:44 pm »
Ok. I'm venting. Something I feel like I haven't done here in a long time.

While holding down a full time job, I'm stage managing an opera for a very small company in town. Last summer I swore that I wouldn't work for them again but my future sister in law is majoring in stage management and needed an internship. I asked the company if they were interested and they said yes, as long I came in as the SM. While I thought I did a bad job last year, they said I was their strongest stage manager they've had in awhile.

They decided that the ASM should also do props, and boy does this show have some! The director has the singers eating real food in the show (something that's difficult to do while singing).
She also has the ensemble on roller skates. They were never told in the auditions they would be on skates. And they aren't new skates, these skates are used, so the stoppers are worn.

Then they are skating on a stage that is hardwood and hasn't been repaired in years. The singers and I have been saying this isn't safe, the production managers have said it's not safe, and the artistic director knows it's not safe, but the director won't budge on this despite all the safety concerns.

Also, everyone has gone way over budget. People just buy things knowing they won't get reimbursed because they feel bad for us.

Now about the set: It consists of two moving walls and to foldable walls that are ds left and right. All of which are heavy and require two people to move it. Scene changes are very slow. The singers (when not eating and skating) have stepped up to help, but we have no wing space so we are playing tetris with the set each night.

Did I mention that we only had a 4 hour tech? We're in a movie theatre and we are only in there when there aren't movies playing. We are in the a maximum of 5 hours per night. Last night we finally got through the entire show. We open Friday.

All I'm trying to do is survive, keep my day job,  and make sure no one falls in the pit (which fits 15 musicians and we have 22)

What I'm asking is can anyone share some inspiring theatre stories to get me through this?

I am in the very early planning stages for my masters' thesis.

My research requires me to ask questions from various theatres and local unions all over the US. In a way I have to "cold call" them.

I feel a bit ridiculous asking this, but how do I do it without sounding like I want a job from them?

(I feel ridiculous even asking about it here)

Thanks for your help!

Employment / Where should I put it all???
« on: Sep 30, 2009, 04:58 pm »
Hi Everyone,

I'm having a problem with my resume. I have gone through all the resumes on the browsers with no success.

I have about 15 years experience as a stage manager/asm
I am currently working as a stage crew manager at a university (school of music)
I am currently stage managing shows towards my MFA.

Right now for my main stage manager resume, I have the normal list of shows/theatre/director.
Underneath it I have current experience and it's description. Is that too confusing?
Where should I put my school shows?

I will be more than happy to send my resume. I just don't know how to format it without it looking confusing.

I will appreciate any help I can get.

The Hardline / Musician's Union and Stage Managers
« on: Apr 06, 2009, 02:17 pm »
Does anyone know where I can find specific rules regarding the Musician's Union? I've been on their website, and it gives a broad overview of the union.
Or has anyone worked with the Musician's Union? How was the experience?

Thanks!

College and Graduate Studies / Stage Management or Arts Admin??
« on: Mar 25, 2007, 01:22 pm »
I am currently working at a major university that offers free tuition. The school offers a masters program for stage management.

They also offer a masters in Arts Administration. With this degree I could become a production manager or managing director at any arts institution.

I feel if I just go for the masters in stage management, I'm limiting myself to just stage managing or teaching stage managing at universities. There aren't that many stage management departments out there.

Is there anyone that has a masters in Arts Admin? Does anyone feel "limited" with a masters in Stage Management?

P.S. I used to be in the anti masters degree camp, but gosh darn it, I can get it for free now!

Stage Management: Other / schedule coordinator
« on: Jul 10, 2006, 05:09 pm »
I was wondering if anyone here had a job as schedule coordinator or knows someone that has done it.
I would love to get more details.
I would think it wouldn't be that hard for stage managers to do. That's a big part of the rehearsal/tech process is coordinate schedules

I was wondering if there is anyone who went from being a "regular" stage manager (lack of a better word) to an Opera stage manager.
I have about 10 years experience as a stage manager. I do not know how to read music (fixing that problem very soon).
How were you able to do it? Should I learn a language?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
