Stratford has the biggest budget of any theatre in Canada, they have tons of money. I don't think it will take them long to bounce back, especially with the season they've programmed for next year. This year, they programmed some lesser-known and less popular works, so I can't say I'm completely surprised that they didn't make as much money as they did, say the season there was West Side Story and Midsummer. They will make a lot of it back with R + J, Fiddler and Othello. They've got a new AD who plans to take it in a new direction, so we'll see how this pans out.
I can't lie, I think Charlie Brown was one of the strangest programming choices I've ever seen. It just didn't work.
However, I can't exactly say I feel bad for them, when other companies across Canada are struggling.
And so they're dropping "Shakespeare" from their name, no biggie, it wasn't there for years and years, they added it and now they're taking it away. It would appear that they're growing to be more famous for musicals now anyway.

I was sort of shocked when I read this. I saw the Sound of Music there in 2009, and it was a beautiful theatre. It's sad that such a new space is being knocked down.
I've been inside all of the Mirvish houses (except the Panasonic), and I suppose the historical significance of the Royal Alex and the Ed Mirvish (it was the Canon when I went there) holds up (I'm fairly certain the Royal Alex is a historical landmark).
I don't know, I guess I am sad any time a theatre is (more or less) needlessly closed down and replaced with condos, especially in the "big musical" capital of my home and native land

Hm. From what I understand, there is only one SM course offered in their BA program, and it's an introductory one. I wouldn't put U of C near the top of my list.
I would definitely apply to NTS (very competitive, but worth it just for the application process). U of Alberta in Edmonton offers (I believe, correct me if I'm wrong) the only specialized BFA Stage Management program in the country. I may end up applying there sometime in the future, I haven't quite settled on it yet. There's a lot of opportunity within the program, and I believe you are able to earn equity credits before you graduate.
From what I understand, UBC, Studio 58, York and Dalhousie are good programs.
I went to MRU in Calgary. It's an intense conservatory style program. I liked it.

I usually do cards for everyone on opening (actors, director, designers, PM, etc.) I feel like it's a nice personal touch, and it's a good thing to show your appreciation, especially to those who don't always get all the love they deserve.
I am not much of a baker, but I try to bake something show related on opening (for All Shook Up I made red velvet cupcakes, but used blue food dye instead, making them blue suede cupcakes... I thought that was pretty clever).
I'm big into opening night gestures. I think it's a nice tradition, I love receiving cards and little somethings as well.

On my last show, I was sweeping up confetti from the deck (a lot of it) at the end of a long day in tech. I was called up into the house for tech notes, and I put the dry mop down. I looked down during notes, and one of the actors had picked up the dry mop and swept up the worst of the confetti. That was nice of him.

As an ASM, I have been onstage a pile of times. Come to think of it, I think I have worn a costume and been onstage with lights up on more shows than I haven't.
I've been a peasant, a soldier, another peasant, a maid, I wore a poodle skirt once. I have also gone out onstage as myself for a non-speaking comedy bit.
I don't particularly mind it.

I'm a firm believer in gravy browning to create brown liquid if the actor does not want flavour. I just used it for Jack Daniels, and I got the colour I needed from 3 drops, and it has no taste. You can get so much colour out of just a few drops! A bottle lasts forever. Awesome!

I recommend loose peppermint tea for pot. It worked and looked great in our 50 seat black box, and even smells like pot (whether or not that's a good thing is up to you).

I swear by my black on black Converse Chuck Taylor high tops. I wear Chucks all the time (I probably have 10 pairs in various colours), and I have had my black on black pair for 4 years, and I have not yet worn them out.
