Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Re: SCENERY: Sand Onstage

I've worked in a space that had a show with sand everywhere in it almost 4 years ago.

We're still finding sand.

Yup, in Canada, we lost the Vancouver Playhouse Theatre Company almost a year ago.  It was one of the oldest regional theatre companies in Canada and one of the largest in Western Canada, and it closed suddenly (essentially overnight).

There was an "announcement event" in the theatre, which people thought was their season announcement.  It was not a season announcement :(

I can't say that we were completely surprised that it happened, I mean, it had been looming for years, but everyone had kind of hoped that they would get their crap together and save themselves.  That didn't happen.

I agree that everything should be checked by multiple sets of eyes.  Especially on a long run, things can get forgotten.

I fared pretty well.  I am a huge Dick Van Dyke fan, so it flagged every post about him :)

I'm not totally sure that I understand exactly what you are looking for, but I can offer this suggestion:

Have you tried Qlab?  It's a Mac only program, but it's a very easy to learn program and it's quite impeccable at what it does.  There is a free version, but it's only 2 channel. You can rent a license to the full version for about $3 a day, so it's worth it to try.  I did a project in 5.1 in sound class in uni using Qlab, though.

Of interest, you can also run LX, video and other types of cues using Qlab.  I am a fan.

I'm in Canada, and I hear "Yes" a lot.  "Line" is fairly standard, and it was what my uni classmates were taught to say.  However, I have heard: various profanity, "What?", "Line please", actors who just mumble and "um" until I help them, to one actor who would just stare blankly at me.  I have also worked with an actor who was older and beginning to lose their hearing, so I practically had to scream their lines to them.  It was hard for me to do this, and not feel like I was yelling at the actor.  That was interesting, as it was a large room and I already had to speak very loudly.

1. What is your favorite word?
I love the word "gazebo".  It's just fun to say.  Gazebo.  Or "curtailed".  That's a fun word.

2. What is your least favorite word?
I dislike the word "ointment".  I even hate the sound of it.

3. What turns you on?
An Irish accent and Nerdery.  Bonus points if they geek out over musical theatre and Star Wars.

4. What turns you off?
People who are delusional, who don't see things.  And motorcycles, I have a lifelong hatred of motorcycles, long story.

5. What sound do you love?
Bacon sizzling, mmm.  I am also a sucker for the first few bars of an overture, it means the fun is about to begin :)

6. What sound do you hate?
I have to agree with awkward silence.

7. What is your favorite curse word?
I rarely curse.  My word is "oh fluffernutter!"

8. What profession other than yours would you like to attempt?
I'd be a Ninja.

9. What profession would you not like to do?
I don't think I could ever enter the medical profession.

10. If heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the pearly gates?
I'm not too sure.  I'll have to think about that one.

I might get to do this show in the new year. :)

I know some people who were involved with the Toronto production.  Apparently it was a very turbulent process.

The Green Room / Re: Smallest Audience Size
« on: Nov 21, 2012, 01:30 am »
I've done a show for 3 audience in a 60 seat house.  It was a pretty poorly attended run, I think our biggest audience in two weeks was 20 (that was on closing).  It was a cast of 8, so I felt genuinely bad for our actors going out and acting their butts off for 4 and 5 people.

Tools of the Trade / Re: Do you prefer Word or Excel?

I pretty much avoid Excel whenever I can.  I prefer Word.  Though I much, much prefer Pages on my Mac (it makes the prettiest documents)
