Post examples, templates of slip sheets or pages that you can put in in between pages of your script or other sections of your prompt book. Ex: blocking pages, cue sheets/notes etc.

The Green Room / The Big "Thank You Notes" Thread!
« on: Jun 17, 2012, 02:54 pm »
Does anyone else give thankyou/appreciation cards and little gifts to their crew, and director? If so, what very cheap gifts are a good idea. I used to give out small cheap interesting gizmos.

Tools of the Trade / Stage Manager station
« on: Jun 17, 2012, 02:35 pm »
I want to design and construct a Stage Manager's "station" for the Stage Manager to run a show.

I was thinking of constructing a portable rack-like to contain:
telex/clear-comm station, cue light system, 2-4 video monitors, cubby-like shelves to hold supplies,a pull-out desk for prompt book, with a built-in lamp with a built in connector strip for plugs. All the shelves that hold each equipment can be remounted for any size equipment. In the back would be where all the cables are, nice and neat for in-going and out-going. The station would have a plug to power the power-strips and built in lights.

Any ideas and designs?

I need help to create a form (mainly design and stiff)i can insert behind my script Or on back(i always photocopy my script to be single sided and off right. Im left handed) that has: mini-ground plan for blocking, sections for blocking notes, acting and director notes, onstage and offstage tech,  costume&prop tracking and maybe light/sound/deck cues etc (if that fits). I can either keep it or remove it when calling the show?

It takes too much time to flip to my other tabs for costumes, light, sound , prop information. it messy to keep all my forms beside me in rehearsal, tech and performances.

I personally like using one book to run a show. Carrying two books become messy and can't risk not having the correct info I need.

I've never had to teach my ASMs to call my show. Majority of the ASMs are students who volunteer to help or needed work hours (some classes require students to work hours toward a production) who are not trained nor experienced in Stage Management. I am lucky to get a ASM with tech theatre knowledge/experience.

For me I like calling from a position that I can see the stage clearly, call actors/crew and call cues. This position can be in a booth or back stage. If backstage I need a clear video monitor.

There are times when I Stage Managed a show at a theatre that had very clear video monitors. Some theatres I had to call the show in the booth cause the video monitors was crappy or there wasnt any at all.

One time I was calling a dance show backstage right at a podium that had a video monitor attached to it. Half way into the first part the video monitor decided it wouldn't work properly anymore. All that was on the scene were moving white dots and fuzzy lines. I had to watch the dancers from offstage while calling the show. It was difficult. I waited for intermission then moved into the booth and called the show.

It doesn't matter where you call the show as long as you have good video and audio of the stage.

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / CALLING: Fly cues
« on: Aug 28, 2011, 12:33 pm »
I have confidence and great timing when it comes to calling lights, sound, FX (foggers, hazers etc), follow spot cues (describing what needs to be done to the last detail) calling and "choreographing" scene changes (had to choreograph the movement of set pieces within the scene to keep it safe and quick) but I have difficulty with fly cues. Any suggestions and advice? I don't think it what I need to say but rather the safety involving fly cues and placement of them.

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Re: Recording blocking

How do I record the blocking for a dance number. ? Dance/choreography notes?
Any suggests and tips? Blocking notations for dance?

I just want to get in the habit of doing so just in case notes and/or blocking notes are needed or required for a dance number in a musical.

Is there a procedure that you do when blocking musicals, mostly when it comes to the music numbers

Is it really necessary to record blocking? I mean what if there is a lot of blocking to record within one or more scenes, doesn't the script have too many notes in it and make it hard to distinguish blocking from light/sound cues. My method I've been using now is to use different coloured highlighters and highlight my light cues in yellow, sound in blue, set changes in green. Blocking notes remain in pencil. Does my idea sound smart to use or no?
