Employment / Dear Abby: advice on how to choose between offers
« on: Dec 28, 2013, 07:52 pm »
From a stage manager deciding between two opportunities:

I'm currently in the lucky position of having to choose between two jobs over the summer, and I'm really not sure which to take - any help people can give would be gratefully received! I believe it essentially boils down to what will look best on my CV, but others may have different thoughts.

Job A is working as a DSM on one production for a mid-level opera company based around two hours outside my hometown. I worked for this company last year in the same position, with the same team, and I absolutely loved it. Rehearsals take place in my hometown, and I would daily commute for days onstage and performances. The contract would run for 7 weeks.

Job B is working as a DSM on one production, and ASM on another, for a different mid-level opera company, based in my hometown. I have never worked for this company before, but I am friends with a lot of people who have, and they all speak highly of it. I currently live with the Head of Production. The contract would run for around 11 weeks.

Pay would be approximately the same for each DSM position, with an appropriate drop for an ASM. As far as budgets go, I believe Company A is slightly better funded, but is not as well equipped.

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / PROPS: Bottomless bag
« on: Dec 07, 2012, 07:12 pm »
We are doing Around the World in 80 Days and need a bottomless carpetbag similar to the bottomless carpetbag gag in Mary Poppins. Has anyone done this? Are there any suggestions to help our prop mistress?

Thank you all!

Tools of the Trade / Help with a sweaty actor
« on: Nov 02, 2012, 01:08 pm »
OK - put on a replacement in my musical, and yikes he sweats through his costume by midway through Act 1. His mic pack is double-condom'd and upside down, and he still almost shorted it out last nite.

Does anyone have any miracle ideas to help? So far we are using multiple t-shirts underneath, baby powder every time he comes off (which is only once an act), throw his shirt and jacket into the dryer at intermission, tape rolls on the stage to re-attach his mic, handkerchiefs and absorbent towels everywhere we can hide them. Surely there is something we didn't think of? (And, we can't run out to purchase those wick-away shirts at Target, this is a period piece). ARGH!

We have a thin actor who (while dancing up a storm) loses his rings every night. We have taped the rings, but he starts sweating and they start slipping and then go flying. He has come close to nailing fellow actors and our onstage MD. We are worried that he will get an audience members next.

Anyone have any suggestions on ways to keep the darn things on his fingers?

Edit to subject line-Rebbe
