(albeit, on an upside-down iPhone)

Glad someone else caught that, it was driving me crazy. The show is such an iPhone commercial and they can't even make sure the cast holds them correctly...

I'm also shocked Ellis stuck around so long--but even more surprised that they're not keeping him around next season.

Seems to me that they're taking next season in an entirely new direction, personal-life wise--with both of Debra Messing's men gone AND the cheating Dev AND the scheming PA...we may be in for another exposition-filled episode (or five) to start off season two. And this will continue to be the show I hate to love....

Patrons are ALWAYS on time, so we never have to hold the house for so-and-so's mom/the mayor/c-list celeb who mentioned they *might* come in a radio interview last month.

Did you check the props table?

It's where it's supposed to be.

No, your other right hand.

Will Brian enter through the back of the house to deliver the line? If he proceeds to the stage, is there a stair or ramp to aid him? What are the sightlines like for that corner of the house? Will people in the balcony be able to hear him? Do we need amplification? Will the fight sequence then begin in the house? How much of the physical violence occurs offstage or en route to the stage? When can we get into the house to mark through the fight prior to tech? Will house adjust their preshow so that we can hold fight call in the aisles, or must we work around them? How wide is the aisle space where the fight begins? Do we have a standard announcement requesting that aisles are kept clear for cast members built into preshow?

New Note: James takes a photograph of the family prior to the wedding in I, iv.

"Can you make sure you wear underwear for your fittings?"

I cannot even count the number of times I've had to say that to supernumeraries. That's really something I never thought I'd ever have to say.

I've had another SM inform me that one actress I was working with had a habit of not wearing underwear to fittings, and that I should plan to text her the morning of to make completely sure she hadn't forgotten. Some people.

Tools of the Trade / Re: Arc Customizable Notebooks
« on: Nov 18, 2011, 11:10 am »
The major problem I found when using the Arc is that because the pages aren't secured by anything permanent, the edges were apt to fray & fold, so pages would fall out if I had wrapped the front cover around to the back too many times. That's my main concern as far as using it for a script, if you ever need to be mobile while holding the script open to a certain page, things may not stay put.

So much fun! This may have to replace solitaire as my commute game.

Stage Management: Other / Re: Creating a Handbook
« on: Sep 24, 2011, 11:10 pm »
I created a "handbook" of sorts my senior year in college, it wound up being a word document of week-by-week tasks, from pre-production through strike.  Each week I'd start a new entry and take notes as the week progressed, on things as basic as who comes to production meetings or where to get the paint cans to set the SM table on when the risers are up, to specific directors' quirks, etc. Then, after the show closed and I had time, I went back and edited, added in references to specific forms, etc. We gave our most experienced ASMs our forms at the end of the year, and they will hand down an amended handbook, along with their forms & ours, so we cumulatively build on each others' notes.

I found it to be quite helpful to create the document in conjunction with working on a show, because things would pop up that I wouldn't recall as notable in a post-mortem handbook draft, but were commonplace and tricky enough to warrant a quick line or two.

Congrats, Liz! I'm curious to hear how conservatory classes compare to the do-it-yourself brand of SMing that comes from a smaller department. Have fun!

Tools of the Trade / Arc Customizable Notebooks
« on: Jun 20, 2011, 03:25 pm »
Hey all--
I was at Staples today to pick up a new notebook, and was incredibly excited to see these notebooks and their accessories sitting next to my typical standbys:

http://www.staples.com/sbd/cre/marketing/arc/index.html

It's a new brand of notebook that uses disks rather than spiral bindings, and you can purchase all sorts of types of paper (to do lists, graph paper, project progress sheets, etc) as well as dividers and pockets, to customize the notebook to suit your project. There's even an insert with post-it flags of varying colors and sizes! While I can't see this holding a script just yet, it could be a really convenient way to organize all the other papers/to-do lists, etc, in one place based solely on your own preferences.

Check them out!

The Green Room / Re: Achieving a Professional Understanding
« on: May 05, 2011, 11:14 am »
I think we've discussed this before, in a student SM Challenge:
http://smnetwork.org/forum/index.php/topic,4023.msg24475.html#msg24475

But, it merits revisiting. It's all a matter, I think, of ensuring that your friends understand the difference between social you and professional you, and know that professional you deserves the same respect from those close friends as she does from the rest of the cast. I've found that having those conversations with people who start to take advantage of the fact that we're close friends actually helps our mutual respect, as oftentimes they just need to hear me say that I'm not going to treat them differently in the room, but of course that doesn't mean we're not still close. It's a tricky line to walk--and, of course, you have to follow through on the equality of treatment.

I've done it. My community theater growing up didn't have a designated SM during the rehearsal process--and even during the run of the show, the people they called SMs were really just crew chiefs on either side of stage.

During rehearsals, the director already had blocking all planned out and would write it all down in her own book, as would the AD. Often, there were rehearsals for more than one scene/sequence/song going on at once, so each member of the creative team kept his or her own notes about what was supposed to happen when. They all planned things out together beforehand, so there were never really many conflicts (as far as I recall; they were also really good at keeping staff disagreements to themselves in front of us).  The Director and AD sat in the booth during the show, the AD called the show, and our myriad of volunteers backstage made sure everyone got on stage.

I know it's not always the case with community theater, but occasionally things that seem odd, like not having an SM in rehearsals, are simply the product of a program with very few resources becoming an established tradition and then not wanting to reinvent the wheel. Hopefully, you've stumbled on one of those! :D
