Hello all! I'm seriously considering (read: already positive that I plan on) going on to study stage management in university and I've looked at a couple of schools so far (Ryerson, NYU, etc.) and I came accross the University of Alberta who's program seems interesting. From what I understood from my reaserch it seems like the environment would be much more hands on than a normal program (which I like) and I also read that you could get a credit towards AEA if you complete the program. I'm just wondering if anyone here has expiriences with this school they could share with me. Have you heard of it? Visited it? Studied there? Do you know anything about the program and it's quality?

Thanks, all help appreciated!

EDIT: Whisking this off to the Colleges board, it'll be happier there.  Also fixing the title so people don't think you're asking about the Univ of Alabama.--PSMK

I was thinking more about a traditional circus just from a curiosity point of view, but I'm also intrested in learning about Cirque, so if you have anything to offer, do share.  ;D

A drawer right beside my right hand to hold pencils, pens, erasers, betteries, etc.

If it's going to be a closed booth any type of air conditioning you can afford (my high school is still begging restlessly for this).

Lots of space to work and spread out your stuff.

Lots of storage cabinets with locks where you can store headsets, etc. where nobody can get at them to break them.

The biggest thing for me would probably be space to move around and make yourself at home.

In my experience, professional actors, especially stars, are not interested in defining what the error was -- it is more useful for memorization to just hear/see the correct line again as it is written.

(Twice as true for new works, where rewrites are likely.)

I definitely agree. Most of the time if I tell them what they said, and what the correct thing is, they get confused and will end up repeating the mess up, rather than the right thing.

I agree wholeheartedly from an actor's point of view as well. Whenever someone tells me "don't say.....say....instead" I invariably end up messing it up.

The post-it notes sound like a great idea, it would be neat if you could reuse them somehow to save on cost though...I also like the idea about the page covers, but coulden't the ink get smudged off?

Definately Thomas Kelly! I picked up his book at a second hand store without knowing who he was and I thought it was GREAT! Also while we're on the subject of online guides, the first thing I read when I started was "SMs Do Make Coffee" by Carissa Dollar.

Just to throw in an unusual (for the US brethren) offering -

Stage Managing the Arts in Canada by Winston Morgan (an active Equity SM)

I'll have to check that out, it's the first book I've heard of for Canadian SMs.

I believe there was a topic on this a while back but I was wondering of anyone had any circus expirience and, if so, how did you come by it? I've always wondered exactly how a "Circus SM" works and what they do. Thanks!
