Employment / Re: Moving for a Career
« on: Jun 05, 2009, 06:29 pm »

I also had a very sad day when I surrendered my Ohio license for a Nevada one. I will always be an Ohio girl at heart.

Not really related to the topic, but I was just wondering why you have to do this ? In the UK, a driving licence is valid everywhere !

I'm running the lighting board for a community show this week (got moved from ASM which I signed up for, as they didn't have anyone to do the board), and my travel kettle and crew tea at the interval have proved a hit (school theatre, no Green Room or refreshment facilities). Think I may get paid work from the SM on the back of it !

Does anyone have 'History Boys' please ?

Many thanks

SMNetwork Archives / 1880s Prompt Books Online

The Victoria & Albert Museum in London has made a selection of original prompt and blocking books from the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company productions of Gilbert & Sullivan's comic operas available online at
http://www.vam.ac.uk/collections/theatre_performance/objects_theatre_performance/doyly_carte/index.html

Apart from a distinct lack of LX and sound cues, they don't seem that dissimilar to modern versions !

Tools of the Trade / Re: Technical Theatre Publications
« on: Mar 19, 2009, 04:26 pm »
In the UK, there's 'Sightline' which is the quarterly magazine of the Association of British Theatre Technicians. I think you have to be a member of the ABTT to subscribe, though, and I don't know if they have overseas members. (They do have associate membership, but I think that's mostly for people interested in the business rather than employed in it, and/or amateurs). More info here http://www.abtt.org.uk/

There's a lot of little theatres out there like the Sarasota Senior Theater who may have someone handling the tech (but not very likely) and a lot of accidents that can happen when exuberance is matched with exhibitionism and very little else.

Certainly in the UK, and maybe elsewhere (?), it's quite the norm for amateur/community theatre groups to rehearse shows for months, one or two evenings a week, and nobody from the tech side is involved until the show moves into the theatre, or maybe the week before. And even when they do get into the theatre, there might only be a lighting board op, and no SM/DSM/ASM at all, and the cast and director deal with all the props.

My tools all have my initials either scratched on, or painted on with neon blue nail varnish, but anything particularly important, I don't lend out.

You'd have scenes in the crew room, booth/prompt desk, production office, fly floor, grid ...

Some sort of dance number done in complete silence, by people in black, doing a super-complicated prop-and-scenery change, is floating round my head.

The Green Room / Re: Trivia Tournament II: Electric Boogaloo

Oh dear, I suspect I may have thrown a spanner in the works by picking General Knowledge 3 for Monday, after last month we had it on Sunday. At any rate, FunTrivia thinks I've already played today's (Monday) game, when it was actually yesterday (Sunday). Sorry !

Tools of the Trade / Re: Luminescent Liquid Effect
« on: May 15, 2008, 11:15 am »
Thanks for all your replies. I've heard back that after having all the problems and dangers outlined to them, the director decided to kill the effect - to general relief all round from the people who were going to have to make it work  ! For a 4-performance community theatre show, it just wasn't worth it.

Completely off post topic, but I have had an amazing number of actors (I mean actresses) forget to wear panties.

How do you forget?  I really want to know.

Um, not sure if we really want to be pursuing this line of enquiry, but ...

Could either be they weren't wearing any when they got to the theatre, and forgot to put some on, or they had to wear a certain colour or style to match the costume and forgot to bring them.

I'm now wondering if the moderator will split this out into a new thread ?  ::)

Tools of the Trade / Luminescent Liquid Effect
« on: Apr 04, 2008, 07:26 am »
A bit of a weird question :

A friend who direct shows for a few local amateur/community companies, has been asked by a friend (yes, I know, it’s all “He said”, “She said”), about using a combination of chemical liquids to produce a luminescent/fluorescent effect on stage.

The chemicals are “phenyl ester with a fluorescent dye and hydrogen peroxide”, and they hope to have an actor holding a bowl with one of them (a clear liquid) in, and another actor pour the second (also a clear liquid) into it, and it miraculously become luminescent.

Given the case going through the UK courts at the moment http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7328892.stm which involved the proposed use of hydrogen peroxide for explosive purposes, I’m inclined to suggest they run screaming from the whole idea – not least because buying the stuff might raise eyebrows – but aside from that, has anyone ever seen such an effect used on stage ? Or anything similar ? Or does anyone know enough about it to say if it’s a good idea or not ? Or can suggest a safe way of producing such an effect ?

Many thanks
Lizzie

The Green Room / Re: SMs in media?

http://www.independent.co.uk/opinion/columnists/pandora/pandora-a-breakneck-production-782027.html

Saw this 'diary' item in yesterday's Independent newspaper (UK). The woman mentioned has got to be the DSM, but why does the writer make it sound like such a person's presence in the theatre is the height of weirdness ?

I wonder if this might be a better solution ... ;)
