College and Graduate Studies / Re: Compilation of grad schools
« on: Mar 16, 2010, 02:48 am »
Does anyone know about RADA or LAMDA in London? Are they good schools for stage management, please?

LAMDA  is the best college for stage management and technical theatre in the UK.  ( ;) declaring an interest !)

But as claire.illett says, there are almost no specifically post-grad SM courses in the UK. Plus, LAMDA and RADA's courses (and many of the others) are SMTT - you do lighting, sound, and construction as well as stage management. (And sewing, and voice, and first aid, and fire marshalling, and cueing from music, and stage combat, and ...)

In the UK at any rate, 'grad schools' don't exist. There are universities, and colleges of further and/or higher education. All of them may teach undergraduate and/or postgraduate degree or diploma courses.

LAMDA and RADA for example, have 2-year foundation degree courses, and students on the courses range from 18-year-old school leavers, to 20-something graduates, to 30- or 40-somethings with no prior higher education experience. They're not really interested in what qualifications you already have (beyond a basic secondary school education), it's more can you cope with the course, are you passionate about the theatre, will you be a valued member of the course ?

Try the Confederation of Drama Schools http://sites.stocksphere.com/cds/default.asp or the Conservatoire of Dance and Drama http://www.cdd.ac.uk/ or UCAS http://www.ucas.ac.uk/ to search for courses.

Hope this helps

Tools of the Trade / Prop Drinks : Port
« on: Feb 27, 2010, 05:23 am »
Does anyone have a good recipe for mixing a port replacement to be drunk onstage, please ? I've tried with blackcurrant cordial, but it just comes out too 'weak' looking, and port is a very dense colour.

Many thanks

'Tannoy' refers to backstage calls in the UK. Eg "Miss Jones, Miss Smith, Mr Thomas, Mr Woods, this is your beginners call". I've always done them in the order the OP mentions. Guess I would put kids first - not really sure. And would it be Miss and Master, or Miss and Mister for kids ?

If I'm backstage as an ASM or running crew, then my black work boots - I have a pair of Magnum Classics which I absolutely love - they have toecaps which are fibreglass or something - not entirely sure what but it means they're lighter than steel toecaps.  They're super comfortable, leather so they breathe and I can wear them for 16 hours no worries.  Only problem I have is that my current pair, which I bought in the UK, are wearing out and I can't find them here in New Zealand!

Like these ? http://www.copshopuk.com/acatalog/Classic.html Wow - those are mean-looking boots ! They have them on Amazon.co.uk too - dunno if they shop to New Zealand ?

Tools of the Trade / Laptop Recommendations ?
« on: Jan 06, 2010, 01:59 pm »
Dear All

I need a new laptop. *Sigh*. I have been researching til I'm blue in the face, about different brands, ram/hard disc size, processor speed, blah blah blah - now I think I've reached information overload, and can't make a decision !

I know computers are highly personal - what one person hates another loves; what one finds indespensible, another couldn't care less about, but can anyone make a recommendation for whatever laptop they currently own ? I'd be most grateful.

BTW, without wishing to stir up the customary hornet's nest, I'm definitely going for PC rather than Mac.

Best regards
Lizzie

I'm on the two-year Stage Management and Technical Theatre course at one of the big drama schools in London. It's a Foundation Degree, which is technically a 'lower' qualification than a BA, but there are 8 or 9 post-grads in my year, including me.

I'd definitely suggest you look into these type of 2 year courses - there are several around the country, mostly at the drama schools. We study stage management and technical theatre (about half and half, but that's a very rough approximation) morning, noon and night for 2 years !

If you'd like any more information, please PM me.

8 ½ days till our class of 23 Stage Management and Technical Theatre students sing two carols in the Drama College Carol Concert. There will be hard hats and tinsel involved

HAH! What are you singing?

One quite serious carol, 16th century, SATB with soloists. Then 'Let It Snow' with toolkit percussion, hard hats and general silliness.

5 days til a test on theatre sound. No-one mentioned tests when I applied for the course …
8 days til a test on Health and Safety. Ditto !
8 ½ days till our class of 23 Stage Management and Technical Theatre students sing two carols in the Drama College Carol Concert. There will be hard hats and tinsel involved
8 ¾ days till we find out which departments we will be working in (SM, sound, lighting, workshop etc) after Christmas
9 days till the official end of term, and we all get suitably merry
19 days til I travel to spend Christmas with my family
19 ¼ days til I get a really stinking cold  :-\

I was in the audience for a touring production of Merry Widow years ago, and (it seemed like) all of them hummed along with the Viljia (sp ?) Song. Each individual was humming quite quietly, but when you've got 500 or so, it was very strange.

So, not such a fan of the World: UK category.  There wasn't a single question that I didn't just have to guess on.

Sorry ! It's my revenge for all the questions I have to guess about US baseball teams, snack foods, and so on  :)

I'm really bad for planning travel this way. "If I have to arrive in Reading by 3pm, I need to leave Paddington by 2.30pm, say 2.15pm, which means getting to Liverpool Street to catch the tube at 1.45pm, which means leaving home at 1pm". Then of course you have to add 50% again to the total time, to allow for the fact that transport within Greater London is utter rubbish. And then you end up being waaay too early !
