The Green Room / Re: Weirdest Item In Your Kit
« on: Oct 13, 2011, 05:30 pm »
Not actually in my kit, unless you count my entire flat including loft/attic as one giant kit, but I tend to hang on to/acquire things that might be props that would be otherwise difficult to source, so for example, displayed on the wall of my flat is a 3' brass posthorn (already been in two shows), and in the loft I have a wooden washboard.

I've only called projections once, so I am unfamiliar with what may be the industry standard, but I use:

Electrics
Sound
Rail
Slide
Pyro
Deck

That's interesting for me (although getting slightly off the point), being UK-based. Lighting cues are (in my experience) called as LX, which is pronounced ell-ex, any flown scenery etc is called as Flies or Fly, and scenery on-stage as Stage, while projection etc called as AV.

Edited to add : And tabs in the UK are always the main house curtains. If you called Tabs Go in the middle of a scene, you'd get a very confused flyman :-) Ah, the joys of a not-quite-shared language !

This is great!!!  I wonder if they need an SM???  ;)

Alas, according to para 4, Austan Goolsbee has already been hired as SM.

Tools of the Trade / Re: Information access barriers
« on: Mar 08, 2011, 02:27 am »
I agree about sign-up forms on websites and the information they demand. If there's a resource I particularly want access to, and it's asking for my postcode and telephone number, I make them up. (Or with regards to the postcode, I use SW1A 1AA which is Buckingham Palace, he he he).

Not using complex sites would also be useful - an amateur company I used to be involved with used Yahoo Groups and I used to spend a lot of time trying to help new members sign up and get the system set to send them the emails to their preferred address. It was a useful resource because it was an email list with an associated website where you could upload forms, images etc, but I wish I'd spent time finding a better replacement.

Please does anyone have an electronic script for 'Deep Blue Sea' by Terence Rattigan ?

I think that's going to be my new quote for trying to describe ASMing. Thanks Kay !

Femininity Shock : When theatre colleagues (mostly actors) who've only ever seen you in fit-up clothes or blacks suddenly see you in a posh dress and make-up. The phrase, "My god ! You're a girl !" may be heard.

I put :

What I'd done previously in theatre (on- and back-stage)
How I got interested in Stage Management
What other skills / interests I have that might be useful / relevant (eg being one of the organisers or your local computer gaming club might be relevant, just playing lots of computer games probably wouldn't
What steps I'd taken to improve my knowledge already (eg reading relevant journals, joining professional bodies as an associate member)

I suppose I could be SMNetwork's resident expert on British life and culture, but that doesn't really require any effort on my part ! Otherwise, perhaps I might be an expert on 'Friends' quotes.

The Green Room / Re: What did you learn today?
« on: Jul 19, 2010, 05:47 pm »
Today I learned that you should charge amateur companies more, not less, than your usual rate to SM their show, to offset all the aggro as they have no idea what they're doing, and won't listen to you anyway.

I also learned that in hot weather, a glass with half an inch of fruit smoothie left in it becomes a science project surprisingly quickly.

(Actually, I love a lot of the Knock Knock office supplies- my other favorite being the binder clips with Important, Urgent, Trivial, Can Wait on them.)

Love it ! I need to check if they will deliver to outside of the US. And I know 'language' isn't permitted on SMNetwork, but the url for this is OK - and the product nearly made me fall off my chair laughing !
