The Green Room / Re: The Greatest Show Never Made
« on: Apr 03, 2012, 06:34 pm »

I'd be worried about a musical adaptation of Jersey Shore, mainly for the all-club-music cast album.

Unfortunately, it looks like it has been done! When I was in Chicago a few weeks ago, I saw this poster for Jersey Shore the musical....

From the rehearsal report last night:

Add: 2 bundles (can be quilts) to be used as babies, one smaller then the other. The smaller one should have an arm or body part sticking out- representing that the baby is dead.

Thank you for posting this article. It made me feel better after seeing an article a couple of days ago "The 10 most useless degrees" with theatre at number 3.

Students and Novice Stage Managers / "Senior Showcase"
« on: Oct 25, 2011, 01:43 pm »
Hi all,
Here at my school (Syracuse University), we have a Senior Showcase for the acting and musical theatre majors in the senior class. Only about 20 students are selected to be a part of the showcase. The Design students participate in the show case, with tables setup containing their portfolios, artwork, and resumes. To clarify, the showcase is presented in a theatre in New York City (so the students travels from upstate down to the city). A couple of weeks ago, the senior SM students met, and we were trying to figure out a way to be part of the showcase. Have any of you done some sort of senior showcase? If so, what did you do?
All we could think of doing was having our resumes available.
Thanks in advance for any help or feedback!

The Green Room / Re: Do you add a personal touch to your booth?

I have Cue, the headset duckie who tours with me to ever booth.  He's adorable.

Like SMLois, I also have a SM rubber ducky. I also have a vampire rubber ducky and a light up ghost sitting on the table with me.

During rehearsals, I keep track of attendance on my own (or have an ASM do it) so that I can black out who is not supposed to be at rehearsals.

Once we start tech, or we move into the space, I hang a sign-in sheet on the call board. I'll generally have a second attendance sheet on my person so that I can check off people as I see them, then double check the board at first call to see who is actually there.

This is what I am doing. ^
I am currently in rehearsals with a cast of 22. I have my ASMs check off people as they come in. Once we move into tech/dress/performances a sign in sheet will be posted on the call board, and like you said, I can then double check who is there and who is not. It was suggested to me that I have the cast sign in each day. I am not opposed to the idea, however, the way it was presented to me made it unappealing.
Also, when I was in high school, I had the cast sign in each day. I wanted to try to move away from how I stage managed in high school.
But, I think for large casts it's a good idea to either have the cast sign in themselves or have an ASM check off people as they arrive.

I do not send rehearsal reports to my actors, just the production team.
However, I do send daily rehearsal calls to actors. I am currently in rehearsals for a production of Lysistrata. The show deals with war and sex, so I decided to add a "sex fact of the day" to the daily call that gets emailed out and posted on the callboard. Yesterday was our second day of rehearsal, and several cast members came up to me to tell me how much they enjoyed the sex fact. One of my friends did Jungal Book (not the Disney version) and had an animal fact of the day for the daily call.

From last nights rehearsal report for Lysistrata:

[Costume Designer]: (Director) would like to talk to you about the erections.

Not from a rehearsal/performance report but the set designer for the show I will be working on (Lysistrata) sent me this:

‎"How does one fight with their erection? We must look into that."

It was in an email from the director. They are still in the concept phase.

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: SM Internships??
« on: Dec 27, 2009, 05:31 pm »
I too am looking into internships for the summer. I am currently a sophomore in college getting a BFA in stage management. I am looking to build up my experience with something outside of school. I have already found a few places but I'm wondering if others on this site might have some suggestions (everyone on here has been super helpful so I thought I'd give it a shot). Ideally someplace/summer stock with an internship for stage management with a stipend and housing although those are not limiting factors.

rpicket6, I looked at West Virginia Public Theatre company and they did not have any info on an internship, should I contact them directly?

Thanks for any info!

College and Graduate Studies / Re: Syracuse University?

I am currently a freshman stage management major here at Syracuse. I would be happy to answer any questions you have about the program, school, or college in general. None of the schools I looked at really linked me up with current students. But if you want to talk to some other students besides me who are upperclassman I might be able to get you in contact with them.

I'm from Seattle and I'm going to school for stage management. But out of state as I could not find any good programs that fit what I needed. With that said, I know Cornish College of the Arts has a concentration in stage management: http://www.cornish.edu/performance_production/#SM
I think University of Washington has a good acting program, but that is a graduate degree.
Would schools out of state be an option for you? I would suggest that as there are many schools that have SM degrees and/or good theatre.

No problem. I'm sending you a PM to answer all your questions.
