Welcome, and what a story! Between you and me, on some shows I still cross my fingers that no one actually breaks any legs.

The Green Room / Re: Happy International Stage Manager Day!

To celebrate, the universe gave me my first ever missing actor from a cast of three! The performance he missed was prep for a mini-tour, which meant he was responsible for sound cues, scene changes, and played 6 different characters. Luckily the playwright was still in town and stepped in while I called lights and ran sound while crouched behind the set backstage and giving the playwright his entrance cues.

I celebrated by going home after the performance  :P

Did anyone's cast/crew/etc. do anything special for them today, even if it's just a smile and a hug?

Stephen Schwartz, on behalf of Dramatists Guild, writes a letter to South Williamsport Junior Senior High School administrators for canceling a production of Spamalot due to gay content.

I remember after a performance getting the news that Phil Hartman had been killed. That one hit our cast hard.

Be sure to let us know how it went!

To this day my favorite request is "Can we have in-ear monitors for the whole cast?" After laughing internally (I'm getting really good at it), I said, "Unfortunately, no." I tend to be a filter for a lot of the requests, and I'll pass them along to my AD only if myself and the director are stumped or it's outside of our 'jurisdiction.'
But the 8 in-ear monitors were a no-brainer.

I do short-hand in my script - circle what was wrong and put a letter over the circle notating if the word/phrase was dropped, switched, etc - then I transfer it to Excel. Then it's (hopefully) a matter of deleting each line as they improve.

We were talking about this article yesterday and someone asked, "Why didn't the music director or stage manager ask him if he had the right to make those types of changes?" I told them either or both of them likely asked, "Do we have permission to do this?" and he probably responded, "Yes," and that would have been the end of the discussion. I don't believe it's part of our job as SMs to follow-up to those responses when it comes to rights, royalties, or permissions - i.e. switching around songs, adding or subtracting who sings what, etc. Though some obvious, massive errors in judgement should be approached ("No, you can't play the entirety of 'Under The Sea' as background because we don't have permission") by an SM, if not the MD or Sound Designer.

When I went on the TUTS website it said their Artistic Director Bruce Lumpkin was hired July 2012. It seems like this type of error in judgement is something one can assume he's done at other places and thought nothing of it - a huge problem, in my book. But then to walk up to the author opening night and say his way was better...I had choice words.

They admit that the system isn't going to be that much help for SMs or those doing musicals, but it's a promising step towards a paperless system.

The entire San Jose area has been abuzz today with the news. Guess that buzz hit a reporter's ear earlier this evening.

From my insider sources, SJ Rep won't be bailed out this time. It's a sad time in San Jose.

San Jose Rep closes it's doors as of Monday, June 9th.

It is with an extremely heavy heart that the CAST Board of Directors announces that this production of Gruesome Playground Injuries will be its last.
Due to economic strains that have challenged the theatre to keep its doors open for more than a year, the board reluctantly decided the organization cannot support another operating season.CAST has accomplished so much in a relatively short amount of time – it is a three-time winner of Creative Loafing’s Company of the Year award, among many other laurels, and has received acclaim from critics and audience members alike spanning eight years and 64 productions as a nonprofit theatre.
Please help CAST wind down with the same quality they have offered their creative innovative theater to this community. We need your help with expenses to move, pay bills and actors and the production costs for the last production, Gruesome, June 6 – June 21.
Please make a donation and share this with all your theater loving friends -

You beat me to it, Matthew.

This one is hitting our community hard.

Good for you for going for it! Dreams, ambitions, and focus' (focui?) shift over time and it's normal - I wish they'd teach students that.

Good luck and break legs on your new adventure together! Don't forget us though, we're going to want to hear all about it  ;)
