Did the SM grab it, lick it, and call dibs on it?

If not, I don't see anything wrong with what you did.

Or when anyone high-up on the ladder comes! My dimmer rack had a seizure the night my dimmer rack crashed, but at least she got to see just what we were paid to do!

Job Postings / Costume Shop Manager & Props Master job listings
« on: May 07, 2015, 03:47 pm »
Please pass along to any interested parties.

Children's Theatre of Charlotte is taking applications for Props Master and Costume Shop Manager positions. Also within the next week or two there should be a listing for A/V Engineer!

We'll tell you that every position in every theater is different; what a PM does in one place can have an entirely different set of responsibilities at another.

The PM where I work has little to do directly with rehearsals and performances as they are going. He is responsible for the overall upkeep of the spaces, safety procedures, hiring production, making sure protocol is met, scheduling of production strikes/load-ins, the production budget...he's sort of the PSM of production dept.

Self-Promotion / When POTUS gives you a day off
« on: Apr 14, 2015, 04:57 pm »
Well, we HAD two shows scheduled for tomorrow, but POTUS gave us the day off instead. We can't even be in the same building. Guess I'm cleaning my house.

The Green Room / Re: The Stage Manager's Nightmare

Not a nightmare, which is a welcome change of pace...

I had a dream recently that my theatre hired Lea Salonga for a show, and during rehearsals she insisted that I drink a shot every time the director gave her a note.

I woke up so freakin' happy.

I'll get the season calendar before the last season ends with requests for notes, especially to see if there's any train wrecks coming (we have a PACKED's kinda ridiculous). Because of family obligations I try to push for rehearsals I'm managing to end by a certain time so I can have my son. They're sympathetic but it doesn't always happen, especially if rehearsals have to be in the evening due to student cast members. Sigh, work/life balance is hard!

The Green Room / Odd legal stuff you've learned
« on: Feb 27, 2015, 10:27 am »
I had this occur during a rehearsal last month. I had always been told that if you don't have the rights to perform a song onstage that you can't use it. We were wanting to add a snippet of "Celebration" by Kool & The Gang into the end of a dance number; we checked with our resident A/V engineer to see if it fell into our existing licensing purchase (forgive me if I use the incorrect wordage). It didn't, and we would have had to pay extra in order to use it. BUT in the process we also learned that you can use any song at all so long as you change the words and make it clear that it's a parody, then it's free. I had no idea this was legal.
It made me wonder if anyone else had come across misconceptions about the legalities of certain aspects of our field and found them either untrue or found a giant loophole.

**Of course before taking any of our word for it, make sure you check with your theater's policies or legal department if necessary**
