Something tells me if the theater goes so far as to ban you, you did do something wrong.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/comedy/what-to-see/theatre-bans-jim-davidson-from-performing-/

Which leads to an interesting question...has anyone shown their dissatisfaction to a performer in the way as this light board op did?

Coraline (musical version)
Children's Theatre of Charlotte, Charlotte NC

Going into tech tomorrow. This is nothing like the off-Broadway version where Coraline was played by a 54 year old woman and Other Mother was a man in drag. Lots of cool blacklight effects and hopefully a lot of creep factor. We're also doing a collaboration with the theatre dept at UNCC to include their students in all production aspects.

The Green Room / Re: Smart Watch use in rehearsal
« on: Sep 23, 2015, 07:25 am »
I've used the smartwatch through 4 rehearsals now and I love it! At a glance I can dismiss emails and texts that don't need immediate attention, there's no other apps or notifications to distract, I've used the timer to time breaks, I found an app that let's me respond to texts from a preset list of responses ("I'm in rehearsal, can I get back to you?"). The voice command for texting and starting calls has been handy while on the go, and it's replaced my morning alarm. Best use of new technology for my own personal work/life that I've tried in a long time.

I haven't drunk the Fruit Juice  ;) but I think I've found a good Android version that'll work well. I'll find out tomorrow.

The Green Room / Smart Watch use in rehearsal
« on: Sep 02, 2015, 05:09 pm »
I thought I would purchase a smart watch for rehearsals in order to avoid looking at my phone - it can be a source of distraction and I'm hoping it will keep me from answering non-immediate texts and emails, since while in rehearsals I tend to also get questions regarding up to 4 shows.

Has anyone else integrated a smart watch into your arsenal?

The Green Room / Re: Patrons behaving badly

Not patrons necessarily, but...
The rather large building I work is called ImaginOn and it houses both Children's Theatre of Charlotte and the Charlotte Mecklenberg children's library. Our building is open to the public except for several sets of double doors that require a keycard for entry; well, that is when they decide to operate correctly. Usually it's not a problem, but for several weeks when the entire keycard system was down I caught two teenagers hiding in our smaller theatre that was dark (they ducked when they saw me; I waited a few seconds and when they snuck their heads out and saw I was looking straight at them, they gave up hiding). I had to escort them out.
On two different occasions in the same time period I followed two adults I didn't recognize down our long hallway. Both times they wandered to the stage of our larger space which was basically a construction zone prepping for tech, with a hole at center stage taped off, and no one around because the crew was at lunch. I asked what they were doing: "We just wanted to look around." Escorted them out as well.

The Green Room / ARTICLE: Career or children?
« on: Aug 11, 2015, 01:06 pm »
I know there's a couple of parents who are also SMs, what's your take? As a parent did you feel the pressure to choose or limit your choices? Have you worked somewhere that is childcare-friendly? Anti?

“Ham4Ham Show,” the two to three minute bits of entertainment offered up outside the Richard Rodgers Theatre at the ticket lottery two hours before each preview of the new musical Hamilton.

The Hardline / Re: CER (Casual Employment Rider) and Prep
« on: Aug 06, 2015, 11:53 am »
I think you'll find if you don't prep for the show, you're going to be (or feel like) you're behind. I seem to recall a previous thread (couldn't find it in search) that dealt with the same thing and that person didn't prep because they weren't being compensated for their time. It ended being a big mistake and they suffered for it.
It may also depend on what type of production it is, how much help you have, etc.

The Green Room / Patrons behaving badly
« on: Jul 10, 2015, 12:11 pm »
In honor (or horror) of the rash of patron atrocities this week, including this incident with Miss Patti: http://playbill.com/news/article/patti-lupone-addresses-audience-at-last-nights-shows-another-cell-phone-rings-353042 and this incident with this guy: http://www.playbill.com/news/article/weve-got-the-footage-audience-member-tries-to-use-stage-outlet-to-charge-phone-at-hand-to-god-352826, spill your experiences of patrons behaving badly. Nothing of the "oops I didn't realize I shouldn't do that" variety, but the flat-out "I'm well aware this is wrong but I'm going to do/say this anyway."

It was especially interesting to read that their 'backstage areas' are under the stage floor or on a small platform at the top of the tent.

It seems telling them before they've even hired you would be shooting yourself in the foot. I'm tempted to say to give them notice on the deadline. Tempted...but in the situation I'd probably chicken out and tell them my first day in.
