Tools of the Trade / Re: Stage Management Software
« on: Oct 08, 2008, 01:28 am »
I've not used any of these software solutions personally, but I've explored/demo'd many options before going to my Excel/Web Site/Text Groups combo way of doing things. I think the biggest drawback is the lack of flexibility in the "automatic" capabilities. For example, if your director wants to rehearse a particular scene, the software knows what characters are in the scene, and books them for that rehearsal. However, maybe the director doesn't want a particular actor there because they are minor in the scene, or disruptive in rehearsal, or has a standing Wednesday conflict. Whatever.  For me, the work-arounds made necessary by the helpful software take just too much time to make the software worthwhile. I can handle the exceptions immediately and I have such rote systems for the standard process, that the software is pretty much "break-even" for me.

I do think there is huge value in not re-creating work for every show though. Every time I type up a cast-scene breakdown, I think "how many people have done this for this show already?"  It's a waste of resources that we can't share that information more easily.

I'll second "Flashlight".

Trism is good for killing time.  :)  Not so great for productivity.

When I was in college a million years ago I worked in a psychiatric hospital to pay for school.  Part of the job training was conflict resolution, crisis management, and how to deal with people in altered mental states.

Me too.  A six year career in mental health was great training for working with actors/directors and other theater folk.

I think this has been a great discussion.  We each have to find our own line on what is acceptable.

From what you said, gotracigo, I gather that your solution worked out just fine. Sometimes letting the steam go is all that is needed.

I'm not an IA member, so I don't really know the answer to your question.  Around here you can pick-up overhire calls fairly easily, but to join you need to go through an apprenticeship program, which mostly means putting in your time at the opera house - that's for Local 16.  But my understanding is that in other locals are less competitive and it's easier to get your card.

I'm wondering if RB is equity or not?

Employment / Re: Stage Management Salary
« on: Jun 30, 2008, 02:26 am »
I have a non-stage manager day job. But for my evening/weekend stage management gigs for a large community theater in California, I make around $300//wk.  I put myself on the lower end of the $300 line in the poll, since the rehearsal schedule varies and sometimes I work an extra week for the same pay.

Who owns the building?  I'd go through the channels until you at least ascertain that they aren't baiting, but trapping, and that an exterminator has tried to find the dead rodent. In the venues I work at, I'd talk to the theater manager about it (which means calling during business hours) and asking about pest control efforts underway.  If your company owns the theater, go through company managment.

But, all that aside, for what it's worth, sometimes you can't find the dead animal and there is nothing to do but wait it out. The Union and OSHA aren't going to rip out the theater walls for you.  You have my sympathy if that is the case. I had this happen at my house and my husband and I stayed at a hotel one night because of the stench.  Multiple exterminators could not find the dead rat (but did find another live one) and they said it's common for rodents to die in inaccessible places, because they seek "safety" when they're ill and dying.  Which is why trapping is better than baiting.

What is Morgana Silverthorne going to do?  Is she just let go?

That's what I've been wondering.

Sounds like a compliment to me.  Backhanded, perhaps, but I think you should take the good (that he was amazed, maybe even pleased), at how calmly and well you handled the situation.  Ignore the rest.  Others have already said it - you'll face criticism and doubt for reasons your whole life.  You get to prove them wrong.

By the way, I have a friend in your show.  :)

Employment / Re: Question about invoicing

I would bill whatever you discussed with the lighting designer.  When you hand off the invoice, emphasize that they should feel free to contact you should there be any questions.

I've used Goo Gone, and a putty scraper, for this.  It's less harsh than Goof Off.  Test it first though, because it might take off the varnish.  If it does, then go for the orange oil, but it might take more work.

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Re: Peter Pan

Just chiming in that I've used both ZFX and Foy to do Peter Pan.  They both do great work, but I give the edge to ZFX.

I was in a rehearsal situation where we were cycling between four different rehearsal spaces, and only one (the stage) was numbered.  I made my own portable number line with a long piece of fabric and iron-on numbers.  I just roll it up after rehearsal and carry it with me to the next space.

In a place where you can put down permanent or semi-permanent numbers, you can can purchase number stickers at a hardware store (usually in the section where they sell numbers for houses) and put those down.  Individual reflective ones cost .89 to 1.69 each, but you can buy packages of multiple numbers for about $6 each, and it only takes a couple of those to number the full stage out to 22' each side.
